Out Together and Patient.info partner to expand inclusive tech hubs tackling health inequality and isolation
A Yorkshire-based LGBTQ+ charity has joined forces with one of the UK’s most trusted digital health platforms to expand vital support services for older people in the community.
Out Together has partnered with Patient.info after the two organisations successfully secured joint funding from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s Digital Inclusion Innovation Fund.
The investment will support the development of new digital inclusion hubs and services for older LGBTQ+ people across West Yorkshire.
The initiative aims to tackle long-standing health and social inequalities that leave many older LGBTQ+ people at greater risk of poor health outcomes, financial insecurity and social isolation.
Improving wellbeing through digital confidence
With the backing of Government funding and a strong partnership, Out Together and Patient.info plan to expand the charity’s existing digital inclusion hubs, improving the wellbeing of hundreds of people across the region.
The hubs are designed to empower people to engage with technology on their own terms, focusing on how digital skills can enhance everyday life rather than simply teaching how to use devices. A pilot hub in Leeds has already demonstrated significant success.
Community spaces at the heart of the project
Commenting on the partnership and the expansion of the hubs, Chair of Out Together, Thomas Porteus, said: “Digital confidence has become essential for accessing healthcare and managing your wellbeing, yet too many older LGBTQ+ people are still excluded.
“Through this partnership with Patient.info, we can combine trusted health expertise with safe, welcoming community spaces.
“ I am proud that Out Together is helping people take control of their digital lives and feel more connected to the support they deserve.”
Tailored support to break down barriers
The partnership creates a fully funded, tailored support offer designed to address the barriers many older LGBTQ+ people face.
By providing essential online tools, skills and knowledge, the project aims to help people live independently, confidently and with greater connection in today’s digital world.
Each hub also offers a welcoming environment where people can learn at their own pace, meet others, share experiences and rebuild social connections lost through isolation.
Support available through the hubs includes group training, peer-to-peer learning led by community volunteers, one-to-one support and access to devices.
Tailored packages will range from learning how to email and make video calls to using online banking, NHS services and other essential tools for daily life.
Expansion across Yorkshire and beyond
Alongside the expansion of five digital inclusion hubs in Bradford, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Hebden Bridge, Harrogate and York, Out Together and Patient.info are also developing a national digital health hub and volunteer network.
The national programme aims to provide sustainable, long-term support, ensuring more people can access digital health services even if they are unable to attend sessions in person.
