Consultation launched as Britain moves closer to introducing autonomous vehicles on public roads

The Government is inviting members of the public, industry experts and road safety organisations to help shape the future of self-driving vehicles in the UK.

A new consultation launched today (17 June 2026) will gather views on the safety requirements autonomous vehicles must meet before they can be approved for use on British roads.

The consultation will remain open until 9 September 2026.

The move marks another step towards the wider rollout of self-driving technology, following the launch of a national pilot scheme last month that will allow passengers to experience self-driving taxi, private hire and bus-style services in carefully controlled environments.

Safety standards set higher than human drivers

The Government says safety will remain at the heart of the introduction of autonomous vehicles, with self-driving systems required to meet a higher safety standard than the average human driver.

According to Government figures, drivers currently contribute to 88 per cent of reported road collisions, meaning autonomous technology has the potential to significantly reduce accidents caused by human error.

The consultation will help establish clear expectations around the safety performance that self-driving vehicles must demonstrate before they are permitted on UK roads.

Alongside safety requirements, operators involved in the pilot programme must also prove that their systems are protected against cyber threats and capable of operating safely in real-world conditions.

Potential benefits for mobility and the economy

Supporters of the technology believe self-driving vehicles could transform travel for many people, particularly older adults, disabled people and those unable to drive themselves.

The technology could improve access to employment, leisure activities and everyday services, while increasing independence and mobility for those who currently face transport barriers.

The sector is also expected to deliver significant economic benefits.

Government estimates published in 2020 suggested the self-driving industry could create thousands of skilled jobs and contribute billions of pounds to the UK economy by 2035.

Minister highlights opportunities and safety focus

Roads and Buses Minister, Simon Lightwood, said: “Self-driving vehicles will offer new opportunities for Britain, helping to support independent travel for some disabled people and older adults, while unlocking billions of pounds for the economy by 2035, and supporting highly-skilled jobs.

“The pilot scheme launched last month means people will experience this technology first-hand in carefully controlled conditions, while today’s consultation launch is a step towards clear and permanent rules on safety.

“Safety will always come first. By setting clear expectations now and learning from real-world trials, we can support innovation, protect road users and help make Britain a world leader in this technology.”

Public encouraged to take part

The Government is encouraging members of the public, industry representatives, local authorities, accessibility organisations and road safety groups to contribute their views.

Feedback gathered through the consultation will help inform the long-term regulatory framework for self-driving vehicles, ensuring the technology is introduced safely, responsibly and with public confidence at its core.
