Passengers urged to snap up cut-price tickets as Government freezes rail fares for the first time in three decades
The Great British Rail Sale has returned, offering millions of passengers the chance to travel by train at dramatically reduced prices, with discounts available on more than three million tickets across the country.
Running for one week only, from 6 to 12 January, the sale will see savings of well over 50 per cent on many advance and off-peak fares, making rail travel significantly more affordable for commuters, families and leisure travellers alike.
Millions of Tickets, Months of Travel
Discounted fares purchased during the sale can be used for journeys between January 13 and March 25, 2026, covering thousands of popular routes across Britain. Nearly all train operators are participating, ensuring nationwide coverage from coastal towns to major cities.
Passengers planning half-term activities, weekend breaks, or essential work travel are expected to benefit, with millions of reduced-price tickets released for journeys of all sizes.
From City Breaks to Airport Runs
Examples of the savings on offer include £10 journeys from Portsmouth to London Waterloo — a 59 per cent reduction — ideal for those heading to museums, meetings or leisure attractions in the capital. Travellers flying abroad can also benefit, with tickets from Manchester Piccadilly to Manchester Airport priced at just £1.20, down from £2.90.
Rail Fare Freeze Boosts Affordability
The return of the Rail Sale follows the Government’s decision to freeze rail fares for the first time in 30 years, a move aimed at easing cost-of-living pressures and putting money back into passengers’ pockets.
The sale also coincides with plans for major reform of Britain’s railways through the creation of Great British Railways (GBR). The new nationalised body will bring together 17 separate organisations under a single structure, to reduce bureaucracy and deliver a more reliable and passenger-focused rail network.
Government Commitment to Public Ownership
Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander, said:
“The Rail Sale is back – and it means further discounts for passengers as we freeze rail fares for the first time in three decades to help ease the cost of living.
“We all want to see cheaper rail travel, so whether you’re planning a half term getaway, or visiting friends or family, this sale offers huge reductions.
“It’s all part of our plans to build a railway owned by the public, that works for the public.”
A Proven Boost for Passengers and Industry
This marks the fourth year of the Great British Rail Sale. Last year’s event saved passengers an average of around £8 per journey, with more than one million tickets sold and over £9 million generated in ticket revenue for the rail industry.
Rail leaders say the sale continues to encourage people back onto the network, supporting both local economies and long-term sustainability goals.
Choosing Rail for a Greener Future
Travelling by train remains one of the quickest and most environmentally friendly ways to get around. The Government has reiterated its commitment to shifting more journeys onto rail, helping to cut carbon emissions and reduce congestion on roads, while freeing up space for freight and emergency services.
Jacqueline Starr, Executive Chair and CEO of Rail Delivery Group, said:
“The Rail Sale gives people even more reasons to choose rail, whether it’s reconnecting with loved ones or exploring new places. Rail continues to play a vital role in the lives of millions, supporting local economies and offering a more sustainable way to travel.
“This year’s Rail Sale will offer millions of discounted advance fares across the network from 6 January, giving customers the chance to save on journeys big and small. By making rail travel more accessible, we hope even more people will enjoy the convenience and comfort of travelling by rail.”
Boost for Tourism Across Britain
Tourism leaders have also welcomed the return of the sale, highlighting its potential to drive sustainable domestic travel and support visitor attractions across the UK.
Patricia Yates, CEO of VisitBritain, said:
“The new year provides the perfect opportunity to hop onto a train and explore Britain’s great tourism treasures sustainably, boosting the economy by supporting our fantastic visitor experiences and attractions.
“Whether it’s a cultural break in one of our vibrant regional cities, a set jetting stay at a world-famous filming backdrop or the friendly welcome from our picturesque coastal and rural destinations, Britain has something for everyone to enjoy, creating memories of a lifetime for visitors.”
With millions of tickets available and demand expected to be high, passengers are being encouraged to plan ahead and book early to secure the biggest savings during the Great British Rail Sale.
