Grenada and Cuba Collaborate to Honour Former PM Maurice Bishop

Grenada and Cuba are joining hands to commemorate the legacy of former Prime Minister Maurice Bishop by creating a commemorative bust in his honour. Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell of Grenada announced this initiative during a recent visit to Cuba, aiming to unveil the bust as part of the National Heroes Day celebrations on 19th October.

The collaborative effort involves a Cuban foundation working closely with the Government of Grenada to craft the bust, symbolising Maurice Bishop and his 18 comrades who were tragically killed in 1983. The Cuban Foundation will also impart sculpturing skills to Grenadian students, fostering a cultural exchange between the two nations.

Prime Minister Mitchell’s visit to Cuba coincided with the 45th anniversary of the bilateral relations established in 1979. The visit included discussions with Cuban authorities and the signing of nine Memorandums of Understanding spanning various sectors, such as health, education, agriculture, tourism, and sports.

In a significant move, Grenada declared 19th October as a public holiday in 2022 to honour Maurice Bishop and the events of 1983. The government aims to address the nation’s past while fostering national healing and development. This commemoration signifies a step towards recognising Grenada’s history and the revolutionary ideals that shaped the nation.

Maurice Bishop, a pivotal figure in Grenada’s history, led the Jewel Movement, promoting education, black liberation, and socio-economic development. Significant reforms marked his tenure as the head of the People’s Revolutionary Government until his dismissal and tragic execution in 1983.

Despite the passage of time, the location of Maurice Bishop’s remains remains a mystery, even after extensive searches by forensic experts. The commemoration of Maurice Bishop and his comrades is a testament to Grenada’s rich history and ongoing journey of remembrance and reconciliation.
