Grey Bin Collections Set to Resume Across Kirklees Next Week

Kirklees households will receive a grey bin collection next week, as the council takes action to address a backlog caused by this week’s extreme weather.

Starting Monday, 13 January, every household in the borough will have their grey bins collected, regardless of their usual collection schedule.

Recovery Plan to Clear Backlog

The council has confirmed that grey bin collections will take priority to ensure the safe and prompt disposal of general waste.

This decision comes after hazardous conditions made it unsafe for bin crews to complete all their rounds earlier in the week.

Councillor Munir Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Environment and Highways, acknowledged the challenges faced by waste collection teams: “Our bin crews have been out every day this week and collected thousands of bins in difficult circumstances.

“But the conditions have been against them, and it’s just not been safe or practical to complete all our rounds. That’s why we’re putting a plan in place to clear the backlog of grey bins throughout next week.”

Under the recovery plan, residents are asked to put their grey bins out on their usual collection day next week, even if their scheduled collection is for green bins or they were missed earlier in the week.

Temporary Changes to Bin Collections

Grey bins only: Next week’s collections will focus solely on grey bins. Residents are advised not to put out green bins during this period.
Additional waste allowance: Crews will collect two extra bags of general waste placed alongside grey bins, accommodating households that have accumulated additional rubbish.
Normal schedule to resume: Regular collections for all bins will recommence the following week, starting Monday, 20 January 2025.

Cllr Ahmed added: “We’ve thought hard about how to deal with this week’s disruption, including having extra collections over the weekend.

“But the forecast is for the big freeze to continue for another few days, so we think next week’s plan is the most effective way to prioritise collections for local households.”

Appeal to Residents

The council is urging residents to be mindful of when and how they put out their bins.

Messages will be sent to registered residents, and updates will be shared across the council’s communication channels to ensure awareness of the recovery plan.

Residents are also reminded to place their bins out only on their usual collection day and not to leave them out too early.

Acknowledging Community Efforts

Cllr Ahmed expressed gratitude to both council staff and residents who have gone above and beyond during the harsh weather: “I want to thank everyone in Kirklees who’s battled against the elements to help keep our communities safe this week.

“That includes many of the council’s staff who’ve kept delivering vital services, but I also want to thank residents and businesses who’ve cleared snow and ice for others, checked in on neighbours, and looked out for each other.”
