MP champions transport, local services, and education in monthly update

Huddersfield’s Member of Parliament, Harpreet Uppal, has shared an update on her work throughout January, highlighting efforts to improve transport, support local residents, and celebrate achievements across the constituency.

Northern Powerhouse Rail: A Boost for the North

This month, the Secretary of State for Transport unveiled plans for the Northern Powerhouse Rail, a £45 billion investment set to transform communities across Yorkshire and the North.

In the House of Commons, Harpreet welcomed the announcement, emphasising the importance of this project alongside the Transpennine Route Upgrade, which is currently on time and on budget.

She described both projects as “key to unlocking the potential of the North, which has for too long been underinvested in.”

Preparing for Local Elections

With local council elections scheduled across Huddersfield and Kirklees on Thursday, 7th May, Harpreet urged residents to support Labour councillors in every ward.

“Every seat is up for election, making this a crucial moment for our community,” she said. “There are opportunities to help in many ways, not just door-to-door canvassing. I encourage anyone who wants to get involved to get in touch.”

Warm Homes Plan: Tackling Energy Costs and Fuel Poverty

The Government recently launched the Warm Homes Plan, investing £15 billion to improve energy efficiency, reduce household bills, and address fuel poverty.

Harpreet welcomed the initiative but stressed the need for careful implementation, recalling issues with previous schemes that resulted in faulty insulation.

She raised questions in Parliament to ensure the plan delivers effectively for Huddersfield residents.

Engaging with the Community: Coffee Mornings and Local Visits

Harpreet hosted her latest MP coffee morning at Beaumont Park, where over 60 residents attended to discuss issues including fly tipping, potholes, community safety, youth services, and Huddersfield town centre.

She thanked West Yorkshire Police and local councillor Mark Morris for providing guidance to attendees.

In addition, Harpreet visited Fusion Housing, learning about their work supporting those facing poverty and homelessness.

She met residents benefiting from the charity’s housing, advice, and training services.

Celebrating Huddersfield’s Heritage and Education

Harpreet also visited Huddersfield University’s Heritage Quay, exploring the Women in Rugby League exhibition and enjoying a behind-the-scenes tour of the archives.

She praised the archives for offering an invaluable insight into the town’s rich history.

At Spring Grove Primary School, she spoke to pupils about democracy and the role of an MP, while congratulating headteacher Shazia Azhar and her team for achieving the prestigious RISE Award.

Harpreet highlighted the school’s outstanding work in tackling disadvantage and improving pupil attendance.
