This weekend, Kirklees will come together to observe Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, honouring the brave men and women of the armed forces, veterans, cadets, and their families.

Several key services and parades are scheduled across Kirklees to mark Remembrance Sunday.

Key Dates and Times

The Huddersfield Service of Remembrance will be held at Huddersfield Parish Church on Sunday, 10 November, at 10.50 am.

The service, led by Reverend Canon Rachel Firth, will see attendance from the Deputy Mayor of Kirklees, Councillor Liz Smaje.

A parade will commence from Huddersfield Town Hall at 10.30 am, re-forming after the service to return to the Town Hall.

In Dewsbury, the Mayor of Kirklees, Councillor Nosheen Dad, will attend the Service of Remembrance at Dewsbury Minister, also on Sunday, 10 November, starting at 10.30 am.

The parade will begin at Dewsbury Town Hall at 10.20 am, re-forming after the service to return to the Memorial Gardens on Longcauseway for a wreath-laying ceremony.

Armistice Day commemorations, on 11 November, are being organised by individual organisations with people encouraged to observe the two-minute silence wherever they may be at 11 am.

‘Debt of Gratitude’

Councillor Carole Pattison, Leader of Kirklees Council, has urged all residents to participate in the commemoration events, highlighting the significance of these days in recognising the sacrifices made by military personnel.

“Remembrance Sunday is one of our most important days in the year when we come together to honour and remember the brave members of the armed forces who have served our country,” Councillor Pattison stated.

“We owe them a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid, but we can ensure their memories live on by striving to build communities that value kindness, inclusion, and unity.”

Cllr Pattison emphasised the importance of collective support and unity, not just on Remembrance Sunday but in everyday life, as a true tribute to the sacrifices of the armed forces.

“Coming together, supporting one another, and working towards common goals we can truly honour the sacrifices made by our armed forces personnel.

“We should stand together, not just in remembrance, but in our daily lives, embracing our different cultures and heritages with the understanding of mutual respect.

“Our thoughts and support are extended to the families and loved ones of those who have served. Their strength and resilience are a testament to the enduring spirit of our nation.”
