Like all key workers, Kirklees refuse collectors have worked harder than ever this year, so they will be taking a break between Christmas and New Year. Bin Collections will resume as normal from 4 January 2021.
Collections will continue as normal up to and including Christmas Eve, 24 December.
This break means most households will have the equivalent of one less bin collection over the festive period, which may be grey or green depending on your collection schedule.
The council says they will be taking up to three bags of excess household waste that is tied and left beside your grey bin on the first collection, neatly flattened cardboard boxes left behind your green bin on its first collection will also be taken.
Any excess waste will only be collected up until 14 January.
The five Household Waste and Recycling Centres in Kirklees will be open as usual, excluding bank holidays, with COVID-19 safety precautions in place.
The full list of waste and recycling collections dates and recycling centre opening times can be found here.
People who are unable to access the internet can visit one of the council’s customer service centres or their local library (if open) where a member of staff will be able to assist.
‘Simple as Possible’
Councillor Paul Davies, Cabinet Member for Greener Kirklees said: “We hope by releasing Christmas bin collection details as early as possible it will allow households to plan ahead.
“Taking your feedback on board, we have tried to keep arrangements as simple as possible this year.
“More people have been shopping online due to the pandemic, which leads to a lot of excess cardboard waste, making recycling even more important this Christmas.
“Not just postage boxes, but wrapping, packaging and many plastics can be recycled in your green bin too. Waste and other recyclables like glass can be taken to your local household waste recycling centre.
“Bear in mind that any wrapping paper with foil or glitter isn’t recyclable but could be reused for craft projects.
“Finally, I’d like to thank our refuse collectors and other key workers for all their hard work this year.”
