The Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team (HVMRT) experienced a significant increase in callouts over December and January, reinforcing the critical role they play in the community, particularly during severe weather conditions.

Volunteers responded to 10 incidents, marking a rise compared to the same period last year.

Increased Demand Over the Festive Period

In December, the team dedicated 128 volunteer hours assisting West Yorkshire Police with two missing person searches, both of which had successful outcomes.

Their commitment extended over the festive period, with volunteers responding to emergencies on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

On Christmas Day, they supported Oldham Mountain Rescue Team with a complex stretcher carry near Dovestones Reservoir.

The following day, they assisted the Yorkshire Ambulance Service with a patient in urban woodland closer to home.

Challenging Conditions in January

The arrival of snow and ice in January brought further challenges, with volunteers contributing over 100 hours to help Yorkshire Ambulance Service reach patients stranded by hazardous conditions.

“While many associate us with mountain rescues, our expertise and specialised 4×4 vehicles are invaluable in urban areas during severe weather,” said David Honour, Team Leader.

“We can quickly access areas made impassable by snow and ice, ensuring vital assistance reaches those in need.”

One notable incident involved a report from West Yorkshire Police regarding a car that had left the road near Holme Moss.

Fortunately, local officers were able to ensure the occupants’ safety before HVMRT was deployed.

Recruitment and Future Preparedness

Covering the southern half of West Yorkshire, HVMRT recently held its 2025 volunteer recruitment day on the moors above Marsden.

Nineteen candidates braved the cold and windy conditions, with ten successfully passing the selection process.

They have now begun an intensive 12-month training programme to become fully operational team members.

Community Support and Sponsorship

HVMRT’s vital services are entirely reliant on public support and sponsorships, as the charity receives no government funding.

“Their generous sponsorship, commencing in January 2025, is crucial to ensuring the continued provision of our essential rescue services.”
