Kirklees Local Television (KLTV) hosted a moving and celebratory premiere for The Armed Services: Huddersfield Windrush Forgotten Veterans on Saturday, 5th July 2025, at the Greenhead Masonic Hall.

The powerful new documentary shines a light on the overlooked contributions of Windrush descendants from Huddersfield who served in the British Armed Forces.

The premiere drew a full house of veterans, families, dignitaries, and community leaders – all united in recognition and admiration.

Audience members were visibly moved, with many in tears and rising to a standing ovation as the credits rolled.

The evening featured speeches from distinguished guests, including MP Harpreet Uppal, Mayor Liz Smaje, and Councillor Amanda Pinnock.

Deputy Lord Lieutenant for West Yorkshire Sofia Buncy, and representatives from the Sikh Soldier Organisation and The Forgotten Generations group also shared heartfelt tributes.

Produced with support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the film explores generations of African Caribbean military service from the 1790s to the modern day, with a focus on those born and raised in Huddersfield. The project was led by Kirklees Local Television, and represents over 700 hours of research, filming, and editing.

With live performances, inspiring speeches, and a strong sense of pride and community, the premiere was both a celebration and a call to remember those whose stories have long gone untold.

The documentary will be released to the public on 30 September 2025, accompanied by an educational resource for schools and colleges.
