The Huddersfield African Caribbean Cultural Trust (HACCT) and Huddersfield Carnival Management Committee (CMC) have announced that the Huddersfield Carnival will not take place in 2024, despite this year marking its 40th anniversary.

Financial Constraints

The carnival organisers cited a lack of financial support as the primary reason for the cancellation.

Council funding has been withdrawn due to budget constraints, and efforts to secure sponsorships from local and national businesses were largely unsuccessful.

Additionally, fundraising efforts within the community fell short of the amount needed to stage the event, despite the overwhelming support.

Despite a successful return of the carnival in 2023, restrictions on grant funding from Arts Council England and the inability to generate income from specific areas of the event such as the bar and fairground made it financially unprofitable.

The Future of the Carnival

The CMC expressed gratitude to those who donated and supported their fundraising efforts.

Donated funds will be used towards the 2025 Carnival, and the team hopes for continued support from the community.

The CMC now plan to take a short break before focusing on planning for 2025.

HACCT trustees will work to strengthen the organisation with the goal of implementing a successful business plan for the future of the carnival.
