Kumon Huddersfield instructor recognised for creating an inclusive learning environment for children from across the community
Huddersfield educator Iqra Anjam has been recognised as a finalist at the 2026 National Diversity Awards, celebrating her work to create an inclusive and supportive educational environment for children and families at the Kumon Huddersfield, Lockwood Study Centre.
Iqra was shortlisted for the Positive Role Model Award – Age, alongside individuals from across the UK who were recognised for their contribution to their communities.
The prestigious awards ceremony took place at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral on Friday 18 September, bringing together individuals, community organisations, businesses and diversity champions from across the country.
For Iqra, becoming a finalist represented national recognition for the work she has undertaken since establishing the Kumon Huddersfield, Lockwood Study Centre in September 2024.
Celebrating grassroots community champions
The National Diversity Awards were established in 2012 to recognise positive role models and celebrate the achievements of grassroots communities across the UK.
The awards shine a light on individuals and organisations working to promote diversity, equality and inclusion, with more than 1,600 nominees having previously been shortlisted and 200 diversity champions and community groups receiving an NDA accolade.
The 2026 event marked the 15th year of the National Diversity Awards and celebrated people and organisations making a difference in communities across Great Britain.
Supporting every child’s potential
For Iqra, the recognition reflects her long-standing belief that every child should have access to high-quality educational support, regardless of their background, ability or starting point.
As a mother of two boys, her approach to education has been shaped by her own experiences of watching children develop academically while also building confidence, resilience and independence.
Her introduction to the Kumon Method came after seeing the transformation of a friend’s child. Iqra witnessed improvements not only in academic ability but also in confidence, motivation and attitude towards learning.
The experience inspired her to explore the method in greater depth before establishing her own study centre in Huddersfield.
An inclusive approach to learning
The Kumon Method is built around the principle that every child has the potential to succeed. Students work through structured materials at their own pace, developing self-learning skills and progressing according to their individual abilities.
For Iqra, this approach provides an opportunity to respond to the different needs of children who attend the centre.
Students come from a wide range of cultural, linguistic and educational backgrounds. Some may need additional support to catch up, while others are ready to progress beyond their current school level.
Iqra believes that creating an inclusive learning environment means recognising these differences and providing appropriate support.
“I believe that diversity in education is not just about representation—it is about recognising and responding to each child’s unique needs.”

Building confidence beyond the classroom
Since opening the Lockwood Study Centre, Iqra has worked with students of different ages and abilities, witnessing the changes that can take place as children develop their skills and confidence.
For her, some of the most rewarding moments come when students who initially struggled with particular concepts begin to approach their work with greater confidence and determination.
The benefits, she says, extend beyond academic achievement.
Students are encouraged to develop discipline, focus, resilience and independence, while taking greater ownership of their learning and celebrating their own progress.
Supporting children and families
Iqra also places strong emphasis on building relationships with parents and carers.
As a parent herself, she understands the hopes and concerns families have for their children and recognises that every child’s educational journey is different.
Whether a student needs help catching up, wants to build confidence or is ready to advance beyond their school level, Iqra works closely with families to provide personalised support.
Communication, trust and understanding are central to the environment she aims to create.
A national platform for local work
For Iqra, the nomination and finalist recognition are a reflection of the students and families she supports.
“This nomination is not just a personal achievement—it is a reflection of the incredible students, families and community that I am proud to support every day.”
Looking ahead, Iqra hopes to continue expanding the reach of the Kumon Huddersfield, Lockwood Study Centre and support more children to develop the academic foundations, confidence and independence they need to fulfil their potential.
