New grassroots event invites residents to share environmental concerns and shape national action through democratic innovation

A new chapter in community-driven action begins on Thursday 10 July, as Assemble Huddersfield hosts a public People’s Assembly at Huddersfield Mission (Lord Street, HD1 1QA).

The event offers local people a chance to speak out on the changes they want to see in Huddersfield, Kirklees and across the UK, particularly in the face of the climate and nature emergencies.

The Assembly will provide a safe, inclusive space for discussion on the real and growing threats posed by climate breakdown, from heatwaves and flooding to wildfires and food insecurity.

It also aims to explore solutions rooted in community action—those that tackle the cost-of-living crisis and improve everyday life.

A Platform for Community Voices

Attendees will have the chance to share their views, propose ideas for local campaigns, and vote on their top five demands.

These will be taken forward to a three-day House of the People assembly in London later in July.

This national event seeks to demonstrate a new model of democracy, one that could replace the House of Lords with a chamber made up of ordinary citizens.

The assembly is supported by local organisations such as EPIKS (Environmental Projects in Kirklees) and Huddersfield Friends of the Earth, who will highlight inspiring examples of local and national action.

These include sustainable transport projects and calls for legally binding government commitments on climate action.

‘People Are Crying Out for Change’

Among those attending is Clare, a 68-year-old local health professional, who shared her strong concerns about the current political and environmental landscape: “People are crying out for change—we’re sick of struggling with high energy bills and terrible public transport while big business gets rich burning the planet and polluting our air and water.

“I’m terrified of what the future looks like for my kids and grandkids and the government isn’t doing anything. Collective action is needed.”

A New Approach to Democracy

The event is part of a national initiative by Assemble, a movement focused on empowering communities and redesigning the UK’s political system from the ground up.

Backed by training and funding, Assemble supports grassroots groups like Assemble Huddersfield in experimenting with a more democratic and participatory model.

Everyone is welcome to take part in the Huddersfield Assembly, which is free to attend and open to all.

The event will run from 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm at Huddersfield Mission.
