Existing library services to close temporarily ahead of September opening

Exciting changes are underway as Huddersfield Library Hub and Victoria Lane Local Studies Library prepare to move into their new home as part of Our Cultural Heart.

The new library hub is set to open its doors to the public on Monday 21 September, bringing existing library services together in a new space at the heart of Huddersfield town centre.

The move marks a major milestone for both the library service and the wider Our Cultural Heart programme, with the new hub designed to provide a welcoming, vibrant and accessible space for residents.

Libraries to close temporarily for the move

To allow staff to pack and move thousands of books, collections and other resources, existing library services based at the hub in Civic Centre 3 and Victoria Lane will close to the public from Sunday 30 August.

The temporary closure will remain in place until the new Library Hub opens on 21 September.

During this period, anyone who would normally visit Huddersfield Library Hub or Victoria Lane for services including books, e-books and magazines is being asked to use an alternative library or access online library services.

Residents can find a list of library locations and opening times across Kirklees by visiting Kirklees Libraries or contacting Kirklees Libraries on 01484 414868.

Some services will remain available

Although library services will temporarily close at Civic Centre 3, people will still be able to visit the building to access a number of other services.

These include:

• Using public computers to access council services
• Getting housing advice and support
• Returning Carephone equipment using the designated drop-off box
• Returning books using the designated drop-off box

‘A fantastic new library’

Councillor Michael Simmons, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, Public Health and Communities, said: “This is an exciting moment as we move closer to opening the doors at the new Huddersfield Library Hub.

“Libraries are places where people can read, relax, learn new skills, discover ideas, access support and spend time together.

“We know there will be some temporary disruption in preparation for the move, and we’d like to thank everyone for their patience.

“The result will be a fantastic new library that will serve Huddersfield for many years to come.”

Part of Our Cultural Heart

The new Library Hub is one of the first major facilities to open as part of Our Cultural Heart, a major programme aimed at creating new spaces for culture, learning, creativity and community in Huddersfield town centre.

Alongside Queensgate Square, the Library Hub will form part of a new destination designed to bring people together and provide opportunities for residents and visitors to engage with culture and community activities.

With the opening now just weeks away, residents are being encouraged to follow Kirklees Council on social media for updates on the move and opening arrangements.
