Free Parliament visit and hands-on political experience on offer for 18–24-year-olds

Huddersfield MP Harpreet Uppal has announced the return of her Politics Summer School, offering local young people a unique chance to step inside the world of politics and community action.

Now in its second year, the Summer School Programme is open to 18–24-year-olds and will run from 6–10 July 2025, giving participants the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of political, public and community-focused work.

The programme also includes a free visit to Parliament.

Building on a successful first year

Speaking about the initiative, Harpreet said: “I was delighted to host my first Summer School in July 2025.

“It was a fantastic week packed full of visits to Cummins, Kirklees Council, the BBC studios, Parliament and No.10 Downing Street.

“I want local young people to have the chance to see politics in action, and I am so excited to be launching this programme again this year.”

The scheme aims to demystify politics and show how decisions are made at both local and national level, while encouraging greater youth involvement in public life.

‘You’ll have fun and you’ll learn a lot’

Nav, who took part in last year’s Summer School, praised the experience and encouraged others to apply.

“Attending Harpreet’s summer school provided me with a really interesting insight into the crucial role she and her team play in representing our community.

“Having the opportunity to also meet and chat with a range of people from different sectors was also very valuable and informative.

“I’d heavily recommend it to anyone interested in politics or anyone who wishes to get to know more about the political field. You’ll have fun and you’ll learn a lot from it.”

Skills, experts and a trip to Westminster

Participants will take part in sessions led by experts in community development, campaigning, communications and politics. The programme is designed to help young people develop key skills for future involvement in politics and community-based work, while offering valuable insight into how political and public engagement operate.

A major highlight of the week will be a trip to Westminster, where attendees will enjoy a guided tour and the chance to meet politicians, journalists, officials and advisers.

How to apply

The programme is open to young people aged 18–24, and applicants must be available for the full duration of the scheme, from Monday 6 July to Friday 10 July.
