The Huddersfield Town Centre Proactive Team has issued multiple restrictions in a concerted effort to protect the public from persistent troublemakers.

These measures come after the team secured 51 community orders against individuals responsible for offences such as street drinking and anti-social begging.

Since its inception in January, the proactive team has successfully issued 22 Community Protection Warnings and Notices and 29 Community Protection Notices for similar offences.

These notices aim to curb street drinking and persistent begging, with the potential for court action if breached.

Effectiveness

A recent case highlighted the effectiveness of these measures when a 51-year-old man was jailed for three months in June.

The individual had violated a five-year Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) imposed on him in April for persistent anti-social behaviour, often linked to alcohol, which had caused significant distress to residents and shop staff.

‘Swift Court Action’

Sergeant Graham Watson of the Huddersfield Town Centre Team commented on the initiative, saying: “The town centre team was formed to target those making the lives of shoppers, retailers, and residents a misery through anti-social behaviour, theft, and street drinking.

“While we regularly make arrests and prosecute for serious offences, the use of community orders can be an effective tool in managing individuals involved in lower-level anti-social behaviour such as street drinking.

“These orders allow us to impose restrictions, with all parties aware that breaching them leads to swift court action, as our recent prosecution for breach of a CBO proves.”

Sergeant Watson also urged the public to continue reporting crime and persistent issues.

He added: “We continue to urge those who use Huddersfield town centre to report crime and persistent problems to help us patrol where we need to be and take action against those involved in criminality.”
