Doctor honoured for outstanding contribution to community safety and rehabilitation

A Huddersfield-based drug and alcohol worker has been highly commended in the Community Safety and Rehabilitation Award at the Inspire Justice Awards 2025, delivered by Skills for Justice.

Dr Bex O’Gorman, a Dependency and Recovery Navigator with Ingeus’ commissioned rehabilitative services, received the national recognition for her dedication to supporting vulnerable people and improving frontline practice in the justice and care sectors.

25 Years of Supporting Vulnerable Communities

With over two decades of experience, Dr O’Gorman has worked in residential care, led drug and alcohol programmes, supported families affected by the criminal justice system, and provided specialist bereavement support to those impacted by suicide.

In her current role, she works with adult male service users to address substance misuse and build sustainable recovery.

She has also trained colleagues to identify and respond to suicide risk, helping reduce stigma and create safer environments for both staff and service users.

Championing Inclusivity

Drawing on her lived experience as a neurodivergent practitioner, Dr O’Gorman is developing ‘You said – I heard’ language guidance to improve communication with neurodivergent service users and colleagues.

The project aims to make rehabilitative services more inclusive by reshaping how conversations are framed and understood.

Beyond her work at Ingeus, Dr O’Gorman is also Safeguarding Lead for the mental health charity TCD and has pursued academic research at the University of Huddersfield, where she completed a degree, master’s, and PhD.

Her studies have focused on child sexual exploitation, care-experienced children, and male suicide rates.

She is also writing a novel exploring child exploitation in a contemporary setting.

Reacting to the recognition, Dr O’Gorman said: “Being nominated for The Inspire Justice Awards was such a wonderful surprise!

“The reasons for my nomination were based around my passion for sharing knowledge and collaborative working, so to be recognised for doing the things I love felt a little like cheating!

“I was shortlisted in the category and received a Highly Commended award, which was truly unexpected, and something I will treasure.”
