EPIKS reveals first survey findings and launches new initiatives to improve active travel in the town

Local environmental group EPIKS (Environmental Projects in Kirklees) has shared the first results from its summer surveys on active travel in Huddersfield – and is now calling on more residents to get involved.

The findings, gathered through an interactive online map and survey tool, have already highlighted a pressing need for clearer route information and better maps to help people feel more confident when walking, wheeling or cycling around the town.

Confidence and Clarity Key to Getting People Moving

Respondents frequently cited a lack of confidence and familiarity with routes, especially when travelling to and from Huddersfield town centre, as a major barrier.

In response, EPIKS has announced plans to produce a series of beginner-friendly cycling videos showcasing practical routes across the town.

The group will also offer cycle training and advice sessions to support those who feel less confident on two wheels.

Community Data Driving Change

The digital engagement platform, developed in partnership with Commonplace and funded by the Transpennine Route Upgrade, allows users to pinpoint problem areas or opportunities for improvement directly onto a map, as well as take a short survey and leave comments.

The tool is one of several initiatives run by the Huddersfield Active Travel Hub, which also provides free walking, wheeling and cycling activities with support from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

Participation has grown steadily since the platform’s launch, with feedback already shaping EPIKS’ Walk Wheel Ride Huddersfield project.

Beth Lomas, Active Travel Manager for EPIKS, said: “We’ve been talking to people across Huddersfield about their views and experiences of walking, wheeling and cycling, and we’ve had some really engaging conversations so far.

“Several key challenges have been identified, and we aim to develop our activities in relation to reducing these barriers.

“We will present our research to Kirklees Council to support the development of future active travel-friendly policies.”

To encourage more people to take part, EPIKS has launched a giveaway worth over £850.

Anyone who completes the survey via the Commonplace site will be entered into a prize draw to win a Bickerton folding bike alongside a hamper of local goodies.

EPIKS stresses that, while it is not responsible for infrastructure delivery, community-driven data is crucial for influencing decision-making and ensuring local travel improvements reflect the needs of residents.
