Former Queensgate Market transformed into new community library, food hall and public square, as Kirklees Council’s flagship vision comes to life

The regeneration of Huddersfield town centre is well underway as Kirklees Council’s ambitious Our Cultural Heart project begins to take visible shape.

With demolition now complete on the former Queensgate Market building, construction on the first phase of the landmark scheme is moving ahead with pace and purpose.

The project promises to create a vibrant new cultural and social destination for both residents and visitors, bringing together a modern community library hub, a lively new food hall, and a large public square – all within the heart of Huddersfield.

A Landmark with a Legacy

Work on Phase One began in summer 2024 and includes the partial demolition of the Grade II Listed former Queensgate Market. Careful consideration has been given to the building’s heritage throughout the process. Iconic elements, such as the distinctive paraboloid roof structures and renowned artworks by sculptor Fritz Steller, have been preserved, cleaned, and stored safely for future integration into the new space.

Now fully revealed, the market’s roof structure is being fitted with new glazing – a move that will allow natural light to filter into the new food hall from multiple angles throughout the day, creating a unique and dynamic interior environment.

Next Steps for Phase One

In the months ahead, structural steelwork and the main elevations of the food hall and library hub will start to rise, offering the public a clearer picture of the scale and ambition of the redevelopment.

Phase One is expected to reach practical completion by spring 2026, with the food hall and library hub due to open to the public in summer of the same year. The council is currently in the process of selecting an operator for the food hall, with an announcement anticipated later in 2025.

Councillor Graham Turner, Cabinet Member for Finance and Regeneration, expressed his enthusiasm for the transformation: “We’re proud to see the first phase of Our Cultural Heart progressing so well and are excited to be transforming this iconic space into something truly special for Huddersfield and the wider Kirklees borough.

“The new library hub, food hall and public square will not only celebrate our town’s unique history but also create a vibrant, modern destination for people to enjoy for generations to come.”

Looking Ahead: Phase Two Approved

The next phase of the Our Cultural Heart masterplan was granted full planning permission last month. It will see the former library and gallery building on Princess Alexandra Walk undergo a sensitive refurbishment to create a major new museum and art gallery for the region.

While some exploratory works are already underway, construction of Phase Two will begin following the completion of Phase One in summer 2026.

Councillor Turner added: “The new museum and art gallery will become a key cultural destination for Yorkshire and showcase the huge mix of talent we have across the region.

“Not only will this project attract more visitors to our town centre and boost Kirklees’ economy, it will also ensure the long-term preservation and vitality of one of our most cherished buildings.

“Huddersfield has a bright future, and I hope everyone is enjoying watching the transformation unfold.”
