New temporary facility will allow traders to continue trading while work gets underway on the town’s Grade II* listed market hall
The new temporary market in Huddersfield is set to open its doors next week, as major regeneration work begins on the town’s historic market hall.
Located on land between the existing market on Brook Street and the Tesco car park opposite the current market hall, the temporary market will officially open for business on 13 August.
The council says the facility has been designed to provide traders with a flexible space while the Grade II listed market hall undergoes extensive renovation and restoration.
Temporary market provides new space for traders
The temporary site will feature 36 indoor stalls and 30 outdoor stalls, with capacity for up to a further 28 stalls on Byram Street during busier market days.
The site also includes public and accessible toilets, a market office and space for other essential facilities.
The temporary market has been developed while keeping the existing market hall open during the first phase of the regeneration project, helping to minimise disruption for traders and customers.
David Shepherd, Executive Director for Place, said: “We know how important it is to maintain a market presence in the town and the temporary market allows us to do this and its location makes sure there is a familiarity for customers and visitors.
“The first phase of the regeneration scheme has been completed, and we have been able to create the temporary market with minimal disruption by keeping the main market hall open during the work. Our markets team have been working hard with traders to listen to their needs and accommodate them at the new temporary site.
“This is a big milestone as we now move to phase two of the major project as we start work on the Grade II* listed market hall where the renovation work will secure its future, protect its heritage and build on the existing offer for customers.”
Restoration work begins on historic market hall
With traders preparing to move to the temporary facility, hoarding will now be installed around the full perimeter of the Grade II* listed Market Hall and the site compound.
The hoarding will help to separate the construction works from members of the public and the temporary market.
The next phase of the project will include essential repairs and restoration to the market’s distinctive decorative cast-iron frame and roof.
As part of the restoration, the market hall’s original colour scheme of traditional reds, pinks and creams will be brought back.
Accessibility will also be improved as part of the redevelopment, with new ramps, automatic doors and accessible toilets being introduced, including a new Changing Places facility.
The indoor market space will also be levelled, making it easier for shoppers to move around the building.
More than 87 pitches planned
Once the regeneration is complete, the new market hall will provide more than 87 pitches.
This will include 12 larger permanent stalls featuring built-in services and storage, alongside over 75 demountable stalls for market days.
The new indoor demountable stalls will be around 50% larger than those currently available.
Market regeneration forms part of wider town centre plans
The regeneration of Huddersfield Market is a key part of the Huddersfield Blueprint, which the council says aims to increase footfall and create a more vibrant and varied town centre.
The market scheme complements other major developments taking place across Huddersfield, including the ongoing Our Cultural Heart development, the regeneration of the George Hotel and the TransPennine Rail Upgrade.
In November 2023, £16.5 million of Government funding was secured to support the regeneration of the market building.
Under the terms of the funding, the investment must be spent by March 2028.
The council says the completed project will deliver a modern and attractive market, alongside space that can be used for events.
