Families invited to explore Windy Bank Woods through stories, movement, art and imagination
Families are being invited to see Windy Bank Woods in Meltham through fresh eyes at a free creative walk run by Huddersfield Literature Festival (HuddLitFest).
In the Company of Trees takes place on Sunday 4 October 2026, from 1.30 pm to 3.30 pm.
The event is supported by Kirklees Council, West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) and Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire, as part of the Explore West Yorkshire Nature Season.
Stories, movement and art among the trees
A storyteller, an artist and a dancer will lead the walk, encouraging families to slow down, explore and discover the trees around them in unexpected ways.
Using stories, movement, art and imagination, participants may notice things about the woodland they have never seen before.
The walk is designed as a relaxed experience for families to enjoy together, and organisers say suitable outdoor clothing and a little imagination are all that is needed.
Inspired by two books on woodland
The event draws inspiration from The Wisdom of Trees by Max Adams and Ancient: Reviving the Woods that Made Great Britain by Luke Barley.
Walkers will meet at the entrance to Windy Bank Woods, off Knowle Lane, Meltham, at the start of the path leading towards Meltham Mills Reservoir. The What3Words location is masterful.illogical.skater.
The walk will not go near the reservoir, and the path is used by the public throughout the day.
Note that the uneven ground may make the route difficult for prams and wheelchairs, and children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
In the Company of Trees is free to attend, but booking is required through Huddersfield Literature Festival.
