It was a sheer delight to attend Small Seeds on the 2nd of February for their Jam in the Jungle event, which was part of Independent Venue Week.
If you’ve not yet visited Small Seeds, it’s a beautiful music venue (and yoga venue) at the far end of town, opposite Wilkinson’s, on the corner. It’s such a beautiful and intimate setting, with a magical forest vibe due to the large tree that’s been planted in the centre of the venue for some time now.
Usually, when I think of bands jamming, I think of them doing it in private, practising for their next gig perhaps. So, this event was super special, to immerse ourselves in the heavenly sounds of numerous local musicians collaborating together; improvised, with zero rehearsals.
We were blessed with a couple of guitarists, a bass guitarist, a saxophonist, a drummer, a keyboardist and a cellist. They were all sensational, jamming so well together, for a good few hours.
Pizza Party
It was such a soul-nourishing evening, with a little bit of dancing thrown in for good measure. An added benefit of visiting Small Seeds is that if you find yourself peckish, Bar Maroc (same owner as Small Seeds) is just upstairs, serving the most delicious vegetarian pizzas, Moroccan mint tea, and a good range of alcoholic beverages. Be prepared for another beautiful setting.
Tuesday nights at Small Seeds is Huddersfield’s longest-running open mic night; The Acoustic Club. Where folk are encouraged to sing, play musical instruments, share poetry and stories, dance, perform circus skills, comedy sketches and more. All are welcome and you are also welcome to bring your own beverages.
Look out for more events at your independent venues across town as we celebrate Kirklees Year of Music 2023 with Music in the Hudd!
