Jamaica has been left reeling after the passage of Hurricane Melissa, a major storm that has caused widespread devastation across the island.

The Government of Jamaica has reported that an estimated 400,000 people have been affected, with damage spanning across housing, agriculture, health, and infrastructure sectors.

Entire communities have been left without shelter, clean water, and basic necessities.

Roads remain blocked by debris, and power outages continue to affect several parishes as emergency teams work to restore essential services.

The Government’s Preliminary National Needs List, issued on October 27, 2025, (The full list is available online here), outlines an extensive range of emergency supplies needed to sustain recovery and relief operations.

Urgent Need for Relief Supplies

The official needs list highlights the scale of the humanitarian crisis now facing the nation.

Immediate requirements include shelter materials, such as tarpaulins, mattresses, bedding, and temporary accommodation units.

Water and sanitation resources are also critical, with requests for 100,000 hygiene kits, 50,000 collapsible water containers, and 10,000 water storage tanks.

Health facilities have also been severely impacted.

The Ministry of Health is calling for vital medical supplies including oxygen systems, defibrillators, field hospital equipment, and emergency power generators.

The agricultural sector has sustained major losses, with the government appealing for seeds, livestock feed, and irrigation equipment to help farmers restart production.

Community-Led Relief Efforts in the UK

In response to the devastation, members of the Jamaican diaspora in the UK are coming together to coordinate relief support.

A Local Hurricane Relief Aid Discussion and Logistics Meeting has been organised to mobilise donations and volunteers to assist those affected.

The meeting will take place at Rawthorpe Community Centre, 129 Brown Royd Avenue, HD3 9QA, on Saturday, 1st November at 6 pm.

Organisers are encouraging residents and community members to contribute supplies, funding, or logistical support to assist with the rebuilding efforts.

A National and Global Call to Action

With large sections of the country in crisis, the Government of Jamaica continues to work alongside international agencies, the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), and civil society to coordinate national response and recovery efforts.

The scale of the disaster underscores the importance of local and international support.

The coming weeks will be critical in ensuring access to clean water, shelter, and medical care for thousands of displaced families.
