Nine Hob-Related Incidents in a Single Month Prompt Urgent Safety Reminder

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) has renewed its warning to households across the county after a continued rise in domestic fires caused by “inappropriate storage” on or around cooker hobs.

In January 2026 alone, crews attended nine separate incidents linked to items being left on or near hobs that were either accidentally left on or unintentionally switched on.

The issue remains one of the leading causes of domestic fires in West Yorkshire and, tragically, has resulted in loss of life.

Everyday Items Turning Deadly

The incidents attended last month included:

• Two air fryers placed on top of hobs that were accidentally activated.
• Four cases where towels or clothing were left on hobs that had been left on or accidentally turned on.
• One plastic container placed on an active hob.
• Two chopping boards left on top of hobs.

Fire officials say many of the items involved are everyday household objects, often placed on hobs temporarily, but with devastating consequences when appliances are switched on unintentionally.

Rising Trend Linked to Induction Hobs

WYFRS has been tracking the trend since 2020, with the increased use of induction hobs contributing to a rise in incidents.

In response, prevention teams introduced changes to Safe and Well recording procedures, strengthened partnership working, delivered additional staff training, and rolled out consistent internal and external safety messaging.

Recent data suggests these efforts are beginning to have a positive impact, particularly among people living alone.

However, fire crews continue to encounter fires, or the clear potential for them, on a daily basis in communities across the county.

‘A Really Serious Risk’

Ian Dellow, from the Prevention Team at WYFRS, said: “We have been concerned about the steady rise in fires caused by inappropriate storage on cooker hobs, especially as induction hobs have become more common in homes across West Yorkshire.

“We continue to encourage all households to keep cooker hobs completely clear, avoid using them as temporary storage, and ensure controls are not knocked or activated accidentally.

“We have unfortunately seen people lose their lives due to fires started this way, so it’s a really serious risk, for something that can seem so harmless.”

Support for Vulnerable Residents

Fire chiefs are urging residents to check on friends, neighbours and relatives who may be more vulnerable to fire risk.
