Libraries, communities and partners unite to inspire a lifelong love of reading

Kirklees Council has announced its support for the National Year of Reading 2026, a UK-wide campaign aimed at inspiring a love of reading, improving literacy and highlighting the vital role reading plays in everyday life and wellbeing.

The National Year of Reading encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to read more often and in ways that suit them, from novels and poetry to audiobooks, graphic novels, newspapers and digital content.

The campaign also places a strong emphasis on the importance of libraries, schools, families and communities in helping people develop lifelong reading habits.

A year of activity across Kirklees

Throughout 2026, Kirklees Council will deliver a wide-ranging programme of events and activities across the borough, building on the strengths of its libraries, cultural venues, schools and community partners.

Planned activities across libraries and community settings include family-friendly reading activities and storytelling events, a Summer of Sport and reading, and early years and school-age reading challenges through the innovative Library Adventures scheme.

There will also be events exploring local and family histories, creative writing and illustration workshops for children and young people, reading for wellness sessions, and outreach activity bringing books and reading into community spaces, care settings and neighbourhood venues.

The full programme for the year is currently being finalised and is designed to ensure reading is accessible, inclusive and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of age, ability or background.

Leaders highlight the power of reading

Cllr Amanda Pinnock, Cabinet Member for Communities and Environment, said: “The National Year of Reading aligns perfectly with our ambitions for Kirklees.

“Reading supports education, mental wellbeing, social connection and economic opportunity. In 2026, we’ll be working with partners across the borough to create exciting, welcoming opportunities that help people rediscover reading or fall in love with reading for the first time.”

The Mayor of Kirklees, Cllr Elizabeth Smaje, also welcomed the initiative, saying: “The National Year of Reading gives us a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the power of stories and the difference reading makes in people’s lives.

“Here in Kirklees, our libraries and community partners do incredible work to open doors to learning, imagination and connection for residents of all ages.

“Throughout 2026, I’m delighted that we’ll be bringing even more exciting opportunities into our towns and villages that help people explore local history or simply rediscover the joy of a good book.

“I encourage everyone to get involved, visit their local library and be part of this year-long celebration. Whether you read every day or haven’t picked up a book in a while, there’s a place for you in the National Year of Reading.”

New digital access for readers

As part of the celebrations, Kirklees Libraries has added All Access Comics to Libby, giving readers access to thousands of comics, manga and graphic novels, and opening up a colourful world of digital reading.
