Bold new vision aims to transform the area around Huddersfield Train Station into a vibrant transport and economic hub

Kirklees Cabinet members have approved a major new regeneration proposal to be added to the Huddersfield Blueprint, the council’s masterplan for the town.

The decision was taken at a meeting on Tuesday 13 January and marks a significant step forward in plans to reshape the area surrounding Huddersfield Train Station.

Transforming the Station Gateway

The council says the ‘Station Gateway’ regeneration scheme aims to create a dynamic and inclusive transport hub that enhances connectivity, drives economic growth and sparks further regeneration in Huddersfield.

The plan sets out a framework for transforming the station gateway area, with proposals covering both the west and east sides of the station.

New Entrance and Mobility Hub on the West Side

On the west side of the station, near Fitzwilliam Street, the vision proposes redevelopment that maintains practical access while introducing a new station entrance.

Plans also include a mobility hub, parking facilities and an enhanced public realm to improve the experience for pedestrians and travellers.

Reimagined St George’s Square

The east side of the station, around St George’s Square, would be reimagined as a more welcoming and flexible space. Proposals include vibrant landscaping, new street furniture and adaptable areas designed to host events at the heart of the square.

Complementing Major Town Centre Projects

The Station Gateway regeneration would complement a number of significant developments already underway or planned in Huddersfield.

These include the transformation of the iconic George Hotel, plans for the Estates Building, the Station to Stadium Corridor, and helping to unlock the redevelopment potential of St George’s Warehouse.

Next Steps Following Approval

With Cabinet approval secured, the council will now begin exploring funding options and potential development partners to help bring the vision to life.

Councillor Graham Turner, Cabinet Member for Finance and Regeneration, said: “The Station Gateway vision is bold, creative, and builds on the significant investment already underway in Huddersfield through the Transpennine Route Upgrade and the Station-to-Stadium Corridor.

“It is a fantastic opportunity to improve connectivity, promote sustainable travel, and create a gateway that truly reflects Huddersfield’s ambition and is yet another step in our commitment to regenerate Huddersfield and create a modern, vibrant town for future generations.

Huddersfield is already undergoing a huge transformation, and these concepts add another exciting layer of growth and opportunity for the whole district.”

Part of a Wider Vision for Kirklees

The proposal forms part of the council’s wider ambition to create healthy, vibrant town centres where people can live, work and relax.

It would complement major investments, including Huddersfield Bus Station, Network Rail’s multi-billion-pound Transpennine Route Upgrade, the ambitious Our Cultural Heart project and the controversial development of the town’s historic open market.
