Unbeaten on the pitch and best-dressed to boot, young people in care proudly represent Kirklees at Premier League ground

Young people in care from Kirklees have done the district proud after competing in a national football tournament held at the home of Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Alongside care leavers from across the country, the Kirklees team took part in the National Championship Cup, the only football competition of its kind for young people who are moving on from local authority care to more independent lives.

Not only did the Kirklees squad go undefeated in their four matches, winning two and drawing two without conceding a single goal, but they were also recognised for designing the best football kit of the tournament.

Thrilling Experience

The young players were thrilled by the experience and the chance to connect with others in similar circumstances. They said: “It was an event which I will remember forever. The way the team bonded and worked together was amazing. People that have never met were working together to achieve the same goal.”

“The tournament made me realise that with teamwork and commitment anything is possible.”

“The tournament was amazing. We ended up winning two and drawing two in the group stage, with no goals scored against us. It felt like a privilege to play on a Premier League pitch.”

“Events like these are important to many people. Sport is one of the many ways people distract themselves from any current issues in their life.”

A Sense of Belonging and Achievement

Cllr Viv Kendrick, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, praised the young people and the importance of giving them meaningful experiences: “It’s really important to us that young people in Kirklees who are leaving care to lead independent lives are given the best opportunities to thrive and excel.

“They have often had very difficult times in their lives and faced more challenges than other young people, which can lead to longer-term barriers.

“The football tournament was a fantastic chance for our team of local young people to gain new experiences and to meet others. It gave them confidence, support and a real sense of achievement.

“We do a great deal of work to improve the lives of our young people in care. We’re proud of them and we want every single one of them to reach their full potential.”

Backing from the Local Community

The team’s participation in the tournament was made possible thanks to support from the Huddersfield Town Foundation and local sportswear company O’Neills Sports of Huddersfield.

The Huddersfield Town Foundation has set up a dedicated fundraising platform to support care-experienced young people.

All funds raised go towards events, activities and enrichment opportunities throughout the year, in collaboration with the council’s Care Leavers and Children in Care teams.
