Appeal launched for business leaders and community representatives to help steer district-wide efforts

Kirklees Climate Commission (KCC) have issued a call for new volunteers to help lead the district’s response to climate change.

KCC are inviting applications from residents aged 18 and over who are eager to support a fair and effective transition to a low-carbon future.

Boosting Local Climate Ambition

Established in July 2021, the KCC operates as an independent advisory body, bringing together partners from the public, private and voluntary sectors.

Its mission is to guide and accelerate climate action across Kirklees, helping the district adapt to a rapidly changing climate while supporting the national drive to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

The Commission works closely with Kirklees Council and the University of Huddersfield, alongside numerous local organisations.

To strengthen its capabilities, the KCC has also set up a limited company, Kirklees Climate Ltd, enabling it to bid for funding and manage its operations more effectively.

Three New Commissioners Sought

The KCC is now seeking at least three new Commissioners, with a particular interest in hearing from leaders within the business community.

Current Commissioners include volunteers from varied backgrounds who bring expertise across engineering, education, communications, community engagement and environmental strategy.

Commissioners serve a three-year term and are expected to dedicate a minimum of one day per month.

Though unpaid, the role offers opportunities to influence local climate policy, collaborate with a wide range of organisations, and support on-the-ground initiatives across the district.

What Commissioners Will Do

Successful applicants will:

• Learn about local climate policies, action plans and practical projects.
• Work with fellow Commissioners to set priorities and develop action plans.
• Ensure the Commission operates fairly, inclusively and effectively.
• Foster alliances across organisations and communities to accelerate climate action.
• Act as a vital link between the Commission and their own networks.

Who Should Apply?

The Commission is keen to hear from individuals with experience or a strong interest in climate change and its impacts. It particularly welcomes applicants who:

• Work within the business community, especially manufacturing or retail/wholesale, and have experience adapting to climate challenges.
• Can represent the diverse communities of Kirklees and articulate the environmental issues they face.
• Have experience in primary or secondary education, including school-level climate initiatives.
• Possess expertise in infrastructure, civil engineering or climate-proofing facilities.
• Work in travel, transport or accessibility, with knowledge of active travel and sustainable mobility.
• Have skills in communications, public relations or media.
• Bring other relevant expertise or extensive networks.

Elected representatives may apply, but must serve in an individual capacity if appointed.
