This May, friends, families, and neighbours are invited to come together to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day, marking the Allied victory in Europe during the Second World War.

The UK Government has announced four days of commemorative events, starting on Monday 5 May, which is the May Day Bank Holiday, and culminating on VE Day itself, Thursday 8 May.

These celebrations will honour the millions from the UK and Commonwealth who served during the war.

Free Road Closures to Support Street Parties in Kirklees

Across the UK, communities are expected to host events, and in Kirklees, there will be no charge for road closures for street parties celebrating this historic occasion.

Residents and community groups wishing to organise their own celebrations are encouraged to apply for road closures as soon as possible, ahead of the deadline on Monday 13 April 2025.

Kirklees Plans Special Commemorations

Councillor Carole Pattison, Leader of Kirklees Council and Cabinet Member for Culture, highlighted the significance of this milestone: “This is a chance for us all to come together to honour and pay tribute to the Second World War generation from across the UK and Commonwealth.

“The 75th anniversary took place under COVID-19 restrictions, but this time, neighbours and communities will be able to fully come together to celebrate with food and music, just as they did 80 years ago.

“In Kirklees, our plans include civic receptions at Huddersfield and Dewsbury Town Halls, a beacon lighting event in Holmfirth, and activities at Oakwell Hall, among other events.

“I’m delighted there will be no charge for road closure applications for VE Day street parties. As some safety and legal requirements must be met, we encourage residents to submit applications as soon as possible so we can make the necessary preparations behind the scenes.”
