Kirklees Council has appointed Jupiter Construction to modernise existing learning disability day care facilities in North Kirklees.

The company, which specialises in new builds, extensions, conversions, and refurbishments, is set to begin work this spring on upgrading facilities at Mill Dale and Crescent Dale in Heckmondwike.

The project aims to repurpose the existing buildings to better support up to 40 adults with profound and multiple learning disabilities and autism.

The council says their vision is to ensure that people with complex disabilities in Kirklees receive the best possible start in life and can achieve greater independence in adulthood.

They claim the updated facilities will incorporate flexible, inclusive designs that promote self-sufficiency and accessibility.

Enhanced Facilities and Features

The revamped centres will include immersive rooms designed for multi-sensory experiences, as well as specialist assistive technology such as an interactive Magic Table.

A range of small, medium, and large rooms will accommodate various activities, while outdoor spaces will be improved to include disability-friendly swings and wheelchair-accessible play areas.

Additionally, service users will benefit from designated outdoor eating areas, raised garden beds, and a potting shed to encourage gardening and outdoor activities.

Councillor Beverley Addy, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, welcomed the redevelopment, stating: “I am so pleased to see the start of another capital project that will benefit some of our more vulnerable residents in Kirklees and help take us closer to our vision of providing the very best in day care services across the borough.

“This will further improve facilities in North Kirklees for adults with complex and multiple learning and physical disabilities – both to support those facing these difficulties now and for those children who will access this support in the future.

“Our modernised facilities will help our residents to enjoy independence and achieve better outcomes in their lives.”

All proposed renovations will incorporate design and technology features that support neurodiversity and cater to individuals with complex physical disabilities.

The redevelopment is scheduled to commence in Spring 2025, with completion expected by Winter 2025/26.
