Steve Mawson has been chosen to lead Kirklees Council as its new Chief Executive.
The decision was officially sanctioned during a pivotal meeting held on Friday, August 18th.
The pursuit of a suitable replacement for the outgoing Chief Executive, Jacqui Gedman, who revealed her retirement plans back in March, was spearheaded by council members.
Following the search process, the council’s cross-party appointments panel unanimously selected Mr Mawson for the position.
As a result, his nomination was submitted for endorsement at the extraordinary full council meeting.
Background
Presently serving as Deputy Chief Executive and Executive Director of Corporate Resources at Gloucestershire County Council, Mr Mawson brings an extensive background in local governance.
His responsibilities at Gloucestershire encompass many critical areas, including formulating the council’s long-term vision and overseeing finance, information technology, property holdings, communications, and human resources matters.
With a tenure spanning 15 years at Doncaster Council, where he held the position of Chief Financial Officer, Mr Mawson has amassed invaluable experience that equips him for his new role at Kirklees Council.
The leadership transition is planned to take place at the outset of October. In the interim, Mr Mawson has already commenced collaborative efforts with the council’s senior leadership team to ensure a seamless shift into his new responsibilities.
‘Extensive experience’
Acting Leader of Kirklees Council, Councillor Cathy Scott, said: “I’m really pleased that Steve’s appointment has been approved by the council.
“Steve has extensive experience in local government and an impressive record of success. He is the right person to help us deliver on our priorities and was the unanimous choice of the Appointments Panel.
“At the outset of the recruitment process, we were clear that we were looking for someone who could help deliver our vision for Kirklees.
“We’re confident Steve can work with our staff, partners and communities to do exactly that.
“Steve’s extensive experience coupled with his financial expertise will also be major assets for Kirklees as we move forward through the economically challenging times faced by councils across the country.”
‘Robust plans’
Steve Mawson added: “It’s an honour to be appointed as Kirklees Council’s Chief Executive.
“I am excited to have the opportunity to lead council staff and assist the council leadership in delivering on the ambitious and robust plans for the future of Kirklees.
“My focus is firmly on that and on providing stability in the uncertain times we are facing.
“I am thoroughly enjoying my time so far in Kirklees, and I can’t wait to spend more time getting to know the team and getting involved in our communities.”
