Food and glass collections to be introduced in every household by 2028

Kirklees Council has signed off on ambitious new plans to transform household recycling, promising residents a simpler and more comprehensive service by 2028.

The changes will see the introduction of food waste and glass collections for every home in the district, alongside the existing collections for paper, card, plastics and metals.

Part of a National Drive

The move is part of the government’s ‘Simpler Recycling’ programme, designed to standardise recycling services across England.

The aim is to reduce confusion, increase recycling rates and make it easier for people to do their bit for the environment.

For Kirklees households, the changes will mean more choice, less uncertainty, and a system designed to deliver real environmental benefits.

What’s Changing?

The approved plans include:

• New collections for food waste and glass

• Continued collections for paper, card, plastics and metals

• New bins, vehicles and infrastructure to support the expanded service

Careful Planning Ahead

The council says the next two years will be dedicated to planning and consultation to ensure the new system is clear, practical and works for all residents.

Councillor Tyler Hawkins, Cabinet Member for Highways and Waste, described the decision as a landmark moment for the district.

“Today’s decision is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to improve recycling for every household in Kirklees.

“By 2028, our communities will have extra recycling options, helping us create a cleaner, greener district.”
