New Service Available at Huddersfield and Dewsbury Sites, with Meltham Improvements Also Unveiled

Kirklees residents can now dispose of limited amounts of household DIY waste for free at two of the council’s Household Waste and Recycling Centres (HWRCs), thanks to changes in government legislation and the introduction of new skips.

The new service is available at Emerald Street in Huddersfield and Weaving Lane in Dewsbury, where householders can now book online to drop off small amounts of DIY waste at no cost.

Booking Required for Free DIY Waste Allocation

To use the service, residents must book their free DIY waste allocation online before their visit.

Each household is entitled to 12 free visits per calendar year, and a vehicle permit is required at the time of booking.

Bookings can be made up to six days in advance, but same-day bookings are not allowed.

Council staff will be on hand at the sites to assist, and visitors are advised to arrive up to 15 minutes before the end of their time slot to ensure a smooth experience.

What Counts as DIY Waste?

The new service allows for the disposal of various DIY materials, including:

• Soil, clay and rubble (such as bricks, concrete, sand, gravel, hardcore and paving slabs)

• Ceramics (tiles, toilets, sinks, and bathtubs)

• Plasterboard

• Asbestos (only accepted at Emerald Street, with safety procedures in place)

Please note: commercial waste is not permitted. If you hire a tradesperson to carry out work at your property, any resulting waste is considered commercial and must be disposed of by a licensed commercial waste collector, regardless of who delivers it to the HWRC.

Improvements at Meltham

In addition to the new DIY waste service, Meltham HWRC has recently undergone upgrades to improve access and efficiency.

The site now features 20 additional parking spaces, helping to reduce wait times and increase accessibility.

Other changes include better skip access for disposing of garden waste, cardboard, and general rubbish. On-site staff are available to provide guidance and help visitors navigate the updated layout.

Councillor Welcomes Service Expansion

Councillor Tyler Hawkins, Cabinet Member for Highways and Waste, said: “I’m delighted that we are expanding our recycling offer in Huddersfield and Dewsbury as well as the recent improvements made at our Meltham site.

“Making our household waste and recycling centres more accessible and giving everyone the opportunity to recycle waste from home improvement/renovation projects will make recycling much more convenient and is a win for everyone.

“By improving our recycling offer, we will see an increase in materials at our recycling centres.”
