Kirklees Council has launched the ‘Healthier Drinking Habits’ campaign to promote healthier alcohol consumption and increase access to support services across the borough.
The campaign will be displayed in public spaces throughout Kirklees in the coming weeks as part of a broader effort to encourage residents to reflect on their drinking habits.
Ongoing Partnerships
This initiative aligns with the council’s ongoing partnership with Change Grow Live Kirklees, the commissioned provider of alcohol treatment services.
Since the collaboration began in April 2023, there has been a 30% increase in the number of people accessing support for alcohol use.
The number of individuals in alcohol treatment is now at its highest level in the past five years, highlighting the impact of the programme in supporting residents to make healthier choices.
Common Barriers
The campaign aims to address common barriers that prevent individuals from seeking help, such as a lack of awareness about the Chief Medical Officers’ low-risk drinking guidelines, uncertainty about where to access support, and the stigma associated with excessive drinking.
The UK Chief Medical Officers advise that to keep health risks from alcohol at a low level, adults should not regularly consume more than 14 units per week, spreading intake over at least three days.
Exceeding this limit increases the risk of serious health conditions, including liver disease, heart disease, various cancers, and mental health problems, as well as accidents caused by impaired judgment.
‘Challenging Habits’
Councillor Beverley Addy, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care, welcomed the campaign’s launch and the increasing engagement with support services.
“I’m really pleased to see more people embracing the support being offered and challenging their drinking habits. It is always a good thing for those of us who enjoy a drink to step back and take a look at whether we are doing the best for ourselves with our alcohol consumption levels.
“We know that most people in Kirklees make healthy choices with regards to alcohol, but where there is a problem, we want as many people as possible to have access to support.”
