Kirklees Council is inviting public input on new guidance for identifying and protecting heritage assets within Huddersfield’s conservation area.

The proposed guidance will outline management proposals and tools designed to safeguard heritage sites and support regeneration projects within the town centre blueprints and beyond.

Funding Secured for Heritage Protection

The Council has secured funding from Historic England to develop these proposals, following the inclusion of the Huddersfield Town Centre Conservation Area in Historic England’s National Heritage at Risk Register in 2020.

This designation indicates that Historic England is keen to collaborate with the Council to find effective ways to protect the area’s heritage.

Preservation Efforts and Successes

This initiative builds on previous collaborative efforts with Historic England, including the preservation and revitalisation of significant buildings such as the Grade II listed George Hotel and improvements to the historic Byram Arcade.

The High Street Heritage Action Zone scheme was introduced to breathe new life into these buildings, ensuring they can be enjoyed for years to come.

The council says that public input will be instrumental in finalising the appraisal, management plan, and shopfront guidance, and will establish a foundation for heritage-led decision-making, which will help shape future projects within conservation areas.

How to Participate in the Consultation

The Council is conducting a consultation for the Conservation Area Appraisal, Management Plan, and Shop Front Design Guide from Monday, 11 November to Friday, 22 November.

The consultation documents can be accessed online or in the reception area of Civic Centre 1, Monday to Friday from 9 am to 4 pm.

Alternatively, residents can email the Conservation & Design team at conservationdesign@kirklees.gov.uk.

Speaking on the plans, Councillor Graham Turner commented: “Kirklees’ conservation areas hold significant heritage, with a rich history and unique characteristics evident in the Victorian architecture dating back to the 1800s.

“Our towns have much to offer, and implementing this guidance will breathe new life into them while preserving and maintaining their heritage.

“Your input on the appraisal, plan, and guidance will help us shape future projects, placing heritage at the heart of our proposals and creating a town centre that people want to visit.
