Those accepted to the programme will learn how to engage with, and organise in communities to bring about real change in their area; they will learn about the role of a councillor and what can be expected of them if they win; and they will pick up handy tips on how to get selected to be a candidate.
Kirklees Council covers a wide and varied area, encompassing four constituencies and many towns and villages. We need committed candidates in all corners of the four constituencies, both urban and rural. Current Labour councillors are working to protect local people from the impact of severe spending cuts. Councillors will need to be innovative and community focused to significantly contribute to the council we need, complete with a long overdue Labour majority.
As we continue to build our party, one of the keys to success will be having a wide spectrum of people standing as candidates to become Labour councillors. If we are to engage in, and speak for, the communities we seek to serve, it is essential our elected representatives are people rooted in those communities.
Many members, trade unionists and activists who want to bring about real change have never considered standing for election themselves – but there is no reason why they cannot, and our Future Candidates Programme aims to provide the skills, knowledge and confidence to make the decision to become a Labour Party candidate.
