Kirklees Libraries have once again been honoured with the prestigious Library of Sanctuary status, reaffirming their commitment to providing a safe and welcoming space for refugees and asylum seekers.

The library service first received this national award in 2021, becoming the inaugural recipient in the Yorkshire and Humber region.

This recent reaccreditation secures their status for another three years.

Understanding the Award

City of Sanctuary UK administers the Library of Sanctuary Awards in collaboration with major refugee organisations.

These awards recognise the efforts of library services that offer refuge and support to people fleeing conflict, climate change, and persecution.

Support on Offer

Kirklees Libraries have been at the forefront of supporting migrant communities through various initiatives.

They have curated a Sanctuary book collection featuring works by and about sanctuary seekers.

Additionally, they host craft and chat sessions, story times, and conversation cafes, and provide dedicated resource packs to aid language development for non-English speakers.

In June, their efforts were acknowledged with the Libraries Connected Reading Award, which highlighted their success in assisting isolated residents with English language skills.

Creative Kirklees also offers a diverse range of activities promoting inclusion and diversity.

Library staff actively participate in national events such as Windrush Day, Black History Month, Islamophobia Awareness Month, and Interfaith Week.

Removing Barriers

Kirklees Libraries were among the pioneers in eliminating fines for overdue items and the need for ID to join the library, making services more accessible.

They have produced materials in multiple languages to cater to migrant communities and conducted library tours for sanctuary seekers, encouraging them to volunteer.

These initiatives have significantly aided the integration of refugees into the Kirklees community, bolstering the case for re-accreditation.

Councillor Amanda Pinnock, Cabinet Member for Education and Communities, praised the library service: “We have an amazing library service that plays its part in welcoming people fleeing violence and conflict, knowing the devastating impact this has on people’s lives.

“I am delighted that Kirklees Libraries have successfully achieved Library of Sanctuary reaccreditation in recognition of their ongoing work to support refugees and asylum seekers to integrate into our communities.
