Kirklees Local Television (KLTV) is proud to announce the official launch of its latest documentary, Soundfest: A History of Soundsystem Culture in Huddersfield, celebrating the town’s vital yet often overlooked role in shaping reggae and sound system culture in Britain.

Released today (14 October), the full documentary is now available to watch in full on KLTV’s African Descendants Forum, offering audiences an in-depth journey into a powerful Huddersfield musical legacy.

A Legacy Rooted in Community and Culture

The film features eye-opening interviews with some of the pioneers of Huddersfield’s Soundsystem Culture, as well as those still keeping it alive today.

Through firsthand accounts, they trace the origins of sound system culture from its beginnings in 1950s Jamaica, where mobile discos brought entire neighbourhoods together, to its arrival in Huddersfield during the 1960s with those Caribbean people who came as part of the Windrush generation.

By the 1970s and 1980s, Huddersfield had become a powerhouse on the UK reggae circuit. Iconic soundsystems such as King Maestro, Earth Rocker and Armadgideon were household names, as synonymous with the culture as the music they played.

Legendary venues like Venn Street and Palm Springs hosted some of the biggest artists of the era, attracting performers from across the country who were drawn to the town’s electric atmosphere and famously welcoming crowds.

Connecting Past and Present

A History of Soundsystem Culture in Huddersfield not only revisits these defining decades but also bridges them to the modern day through Huddersfield Soundfest, a new annual festival launched in 2025 by original members of those same historic soundsystems.

The festival’s debut reignited the spirit of unity through music, and its return is already confirmed for August 2026.

Featuring the voices of pioneers and new torchbearers alike, the documentary preserves a crucial chapter of Huddersfield’s identity while acknowledging its lasting influence on British music, from trip-hop to dubstep and beyond.
