Kirklees Museums have been awarded the Full Museum Accreditation Award, which acknowledges that the museums are properly managed to the nationally agreed museum industry standard. It also acknowledges proper care is taken of its collections.

Administered by Arts Council England on behalf of the UK Accreditation Partnership, this accreditation is the benchmark museums and galleries across the country strive to achieve.

Awarded to Tolson Museum, Bagshaw Museum, and Oakwell Hall, including the Kirklees Collections have all been recognised.

The importance of this five-year accreditation includes the opening of various funding opportunities, the ability to host high-profile touring exhibitions and access to professional advice and support from within the cultural industry. It also gives confidence to donors and sponsors who may wish to support museums in preserving, enhancing, and celebrating heritage and collections in Kirklees.

Leader of Kirklees Council, Councillor Carole Pattison said to Kirklees Together: “This is excellent news for our museums and for Kirklees. It highlights the dedication and hard work of our Museums and Galleries Team who look after our sites and collections and provide engaging exhibitions, events, learning and health programmes, and community activities for residents and visitors, alongside ensuring their preservation for future generations.”

“This award could not have been achieved without the support of volunteers and museum Friends Groups who work tirelessly with Kirklees Museums and Galleries.”

“The status the accreditation provides will hopefully open up many opportunities for the arts and cultural offer in Kirklees.”

Emmie Kell, Director of Museums and Cultural Property at Arts Council England said to Kirklees Together: “We’re delighted that Kirklees Museums and Galleries has been successful in gaining their Accreditation status. This means that their Collections will be looked after and maintained offering inspiration, enjoyment and learning for the local community and visitors to enjoy now and in the future.”

This accreditation adds to Kirklees Museums and Galleries’ current status as a National Portfolio Organisation (NPO), having been selected by Arts Council England to join their portfolio of partnership cultural organisations in 2023.
