Kirklees is set to welcome its first ceramics festival as ‘Clay at the Cut’ takes place in Marsden on Sunday 19 October.

A Celebration of Craft and Community

Running from 10 am to 4:30 pm at the North of England Centre for Arts & Music (based at Standedge Visitor Centre), the event is being held in collaboration with the nearby Clay Mill in Slaithwaite.

The festival promises something for everyone, from seasoned makers and avid collectors to newcomers curious about the world of ceramics.

Alongside stalls from independent ceramic artists, visitors can expect live music, family-friendly activities and local artisan food.

Showcasing Northern Talent

Around two dozen creators from across the north of England will be exhibiting and selling their work, offering visitors the chance to admire, and purchase, unique ceramic pieces while supporting small sustainable businesses and the region’s growing creative economy.

But ‘Clay at the Cut’ is about more than just shopping. The event aims to celebrate the wider community surrounding modern ceramics and inspire creativity beyond the industry itself, giving more people the chance to engage with clay, pottery and craft culture.

Funded Through National Arts Programme

The festival has been commissioned using funding from the government’s PACE (Participation in the Arts & Creative Economy) programme.

It is being led by the Clay Mill, a working ceramics studio in Slaithwaite that provides studio space, tuition and technical support.

The Clay Mill team has joined forces with the North of England Centre for Arts & Music to bring the event to life at Standedge.

Organisers hope ‘Clay at the Cut’ will be the first of many, marking a new chapter for ceramics in Kirklees.
