Ahead of its Premiere event on Saturday 5^th of July, Kirklees Local Television (KLTV) is proud to announce the release of the second promotional video for its upcoming documentary, Huddersfield Windrush Forgotten Veterans.

This new video captures powerful moments from a special preview screening held exclusively for the veterans featured in the film, along with their families, friends, and invited guests.

The screening offered a first glimpse of the documentary and was met with overwhelmingly positive reactions from those in attendance.

The video highlights emotional responses, heartfelt appreciation, and the deep sense of pride felt by the veterans as their stories were brought to life on screen.

Many expressed gratitude for finally having their contributions and experiences recognised and documented for future generations.

“I found it really phenomenal,” said one attendee. “I was really emotional, and I thought it was an incredible piece of history.”

Another attendee highlighted how much they learnt from the film: “I found it very informative. I had my own view about it, but I’ve learned a lot more from the veterans’ stories.”

Attendees also praised the bravery of the veterans in sharing their stories.

“The big thing for me is that the film really gave some insight into what military life was like for these veterans, and it’s not so much of a mystery after today.”

The film shines a light on the Huddersfield Windrush Forgotten Veterans who served from the 1960s onwards, many of whom have historically been overlooked despite their decorated service.

It also honours the history and contributions of Black soldiers who have served Britain since the formation of the West India Regiments in 1795, through the British West Indies Regiment in World War I, and the Caribbean Regiment in World War II.

Dr Milton Brown, CEO of KLTV, Executive Producer and one of the veterans featured in the film, highlighted the importance of preserving and sharing these stories: “Since 1948, the lives of Huddersfield’s Windrush Forgotten Veterans is a story that has been waiting to be told.

“I feel immensely proud to be part of a team, including the veterans themselves, that we can finally tell the story of African Caribbean British descendants who dared to cross cultural, social, and racial boundaries to serve in the British Armed Forces.”

The official premiere of Huddersfield Windrush Forgotten Veterans will take place on Saturday, 5th July 2025, at the Greenhead Masonic Hall in Huddersfield. This special event will bring together local dignitaries, community leaders, and members of the public to honour the veterans and celebrate their stories on the big screen.

Following the premiere, the film will be officially launched on 30th September 2025 on Kirklees Local TV, marking a significant milestone in preserving and sharing the legacy of these remarkable individuals.

In addition to the documentary, a three-hour digital educational workshop is also being developed for schools and colleges to help preserve and pass on these vital stories to future generations.

The resource has been developed in collaboration with the documentary by Researchers Professor Paul Ward and Russell Smith, and Educational Consultant Lucy Charles.

Professor Paul Ward, Lead Researcher on the project, said: “We have created a learning resource that allows students to hear directly from veterans with links to Huddersfield.

“Bringing the community into the classroom in such a way inspires true connection, critical thinking and reflection.

“They are able to understand the context of complex social and military histories through the lens of their hometown, rather than it being an abstract point in time.

Lucy Charles added: “The resource works to support both the teachers and students to embark upon a learning journey together, and as such, learning is modelled in real time.

“The feedback we have had so far from student voice has been really positive, with students particularly impressed with the oral histories from their local area that link to the global and national picture”.

Supported by a prestigious grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the full documentary explores the personal stories of these veterans, delving into their sacrifices, challenges, and lasting legacies, both in military service and in civilian life.

“This project is a celebration and a long-overdue tribute to the untold stories and unsung heroes of our community,” said Project Director Edwin Baker.

“To see the veterans respond with pride and emotion at the screening was deeply humbling. It affirmed why this work is so important.”
