Kirklees Local Television (KLTV) is excited to announce its successful bid for Windrush Day 2025 funding from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government for the groundbreaking ‘Windrush Wise Words’ Project.
Celebrating a Rich Legacy
This initiative will celebrate the rich legacy of Huddersfield’s Windrush generation, honouring their invaluable contributions to British society through a compelling collection of sixteen video stories and an educational resource.
Featuring narratives from first- and second-generation Caribbean elders who migrated to West Yorkshire between the 1940s and 1970s, the project explores themes of migration, cultural resilience, and triumph over adversity.
‘Windrush Wise Words’ will capture their authentic voices and lived experiences, preserving their stories for future generations and fostering a deeper understanding of Black British history and cultural identity.
Cultural and Educational Significance
The project’s impact will reach far beyond West Yorkshire via KLTV’s digital learning platform, providing engaging educational resource for schools, universities, community organisations, and National Education Union (NEU) members.
Developed alongside educators and teaching professionals, this resource will ensure that Windrush history is integral to the British national curriculum.
Fostering Pride and Unity
“Securing this funding is a significant step in preserving and sharing the incredible stories of the Huddersfield/West Yorkshire Windrush generation,” said Dr Milton Brown, CEO and Founder of KLTV.
“The ‘Windrush Wise Words’ Project honours their legacy while fostering pride and unity across diverse ethnicities and generations.
Enriching Communities and Culture
Harpreet Uppal, Member of Parliament for Huddersfield, also expressed her support: “The Windrush generation has profoundly shaped Huddersfield and Britain, enriching our communities and culture. I am thrilled that KLTV secured funding for the ‘Windrush Wise Words’ Project.
“Through storytelling and education, we can celebrate their resilience and deepen our understanding of Black British history. I look forward to the lasting impact of this initiative.”
Celebrating Windrush Day This Summer
In celebration of National Windrush Day 2025 on June 22nd, KLTV will host a livestreamed public launch event featuring special guests and video clips of ‘Windrush Wise Words’ interviewees, followed by a live Q&A session.
This inclusive event will promote awareness and encourage community involvement, facilitating meaningful discussions and celebrating the Windrush experience.
The ‘Wise Words’ Project will leave a lasting, inspirational legacy, preserving stories of resilience and achievement that have shaped modern Britain.
