Dance Dhamaka will bring Bhangra, Bollywood, Dhol drumming and more to Huddersfield
Lawrence Batley Theatre has launched Dance Dhamaka, a year-long programme celebrating South Asian dance, culture and heritage through movement, music and community.
Running from 16 September 2026 to 12 June 2027, the programme will offer a range of opportunities for people to get involved, regardless of their previous dance experience.
The initiative aims to bring people together through the shared enjoyment of dance while creating opportunities to explore different cultural traditions and stories.
A celebration of dance and culture
The name Dhamaka means “blast” in Hindi and is often used to describe something loud, exciting and spectacular.
Lawrence Batley Theatre says that spirit is at the heart of the programme, which will explore the ability of dance to bring people together and create connections across communities.
The programme will include Bhangra and Bollywood dance classes, Dhol drumming sessions and ladies-only Bhangra Nights.
A major outdoor celebration is also planned, bringing Bhangra together with a traditional Gaelic Ceilidh, creating an opportunity to experience two distinct dance traditions alongside one another.

No experience needed
Lawrence Batley Theatre is encouraging people of all backgrounds and abilities to take part, with no previous dance experience or knowledge of a particular tradition required.
The programme is designed to provide an opportunity for people to learn new skills, meet others and have fun while exploring culture, heritage and storytelling through dance.
“Dhamaka means ‘blast’ in Hindi, often used to describe something loud, thrilling and spectacular. And that’s exactly the spirit of Dance Dhamaka: a vibrant celebration of the power of dance to connect us all.”
The theatre is inviting participants to come ready to move, meet new people and make some noise as the year-long celebration gets underway.
“Come ready to move, meet new people and make some noise. Let’s make a dhamaka!”
