Univerity Offering Flexible degree options to support adults balancing work, study and transition

Leeds University is offering a range of part-time degree programmes designed for veterans, Service leavers and members of the wider Armed Forces community who are considering their next steps in education.

The courses, run through the university’s Lifelong Learning Centre (LLC), cater to adults aged 21 and over who have not previously studied at a higher education level.

They are structured to provide flexibility for those balancing work, volunteering, or the transition into civilian life.

Many veterans and Service leavers have already taken advantage of these opportunities, gaining new qualifications and confidence as they move into new careers.

Supporting adult learners

The Lifelong Learning Centre specialises in helping adults return to education, particularly those without traditional qualifications.

It offers small-group teaching and additional academic and pastoral support, helping students manage study alongside personal and professional commitments.

Courses require limited time on campus, allowing learners to fit their studies around existing responsibilities.

The centre also provides dedicated study spaces, opportunities to meet with tutors, and impartial careers guidance for those exploring higher education as an option, with no obligation to apply to Leeds.

In addition, the LLC runs taster sessions and short courses both online and on campus, giving prospective students the chance to experience university study before committing.

Support sessions explaining student finance and the application process are also available.

Courses available

Among the programmes on offer is the BA Learning and Teaching with SEND, which requires a minimum of 60 hours of workplace contact per year and involves one afternoon session on campus each week. More details can be found in the course overview video.

Another option is the BA Child and Family Studies, which requires at least four hours of workplace contact per week.

This course can be attended either in an afternoon or evening session once a week. A video introduction is available.

Both degrees are aimed at those currently working or interested in careers across the public and third sectors, including education, youth and community work, probation, charity roles, and health and social care.

For those pursuing a business-focused path, the BSc Business Management and Leadership offers one evening session per week on campus and is designed for individuals in employment or transitioning into business careers.
