Marsh Comes Alive with Creativity for First-Ever Marshian Arts Trail

23 Businesses to Host Local Talent in Week-Long Community Art Celebration

This July, the streets of Marsh will transform into a vibrant open-air gallery as the first-ever Marshian Arts Trail takes over shop windows, cafés, and community spaces from Saturday 5th to Sunday 13th July.

Featuring artwork from 24 local artists, the trail will showcase a diverse range of media including painting, drawing, pastels, charcoal, photography, ceramics, sculpture, textiles, and felting.

The event will stretch along Westbourne Road, with 23 businesses signed up to host artwork inside and in their shopfronts.

But organisers say this is only the beginning for Marshian Arts, a budding grassroots movement designed to support creativity and build community connections in Marsh and surrounding areas.

‘I Wondered if We Could Get Something Going in Marsh’

Marshian Arts was born out of a growing sense of untapped creative energy in the area, according to founder Richard Byrne. “Marshian Arts started because I kept discovering more and more creative types living in our neighbourhood,” said Byrne.

“Many exhibit their works or put on shows in the town centre, in lovely surrounding villages like Holmfirth and Slaithwaite and in cities like Sheffield, Manchester and Leeds. But there was no sign of any of that activity locally—I thought ‘I wonder if we could get something going in Marsh?’”

He continued: “As soon as I posted on local Facebook groups, I had loads of interest from fabulous people who have all brought their own energy, talents and enthusiasm to the mix.

“When we made a plan to do an arts trail, the local businesses engaged so enthusiastically with the idea, we were inspired. We thought we’d have about 8 businesses involved but this year we’ve got 23.

“At the last count we had artwork by 24 artists—we’re finding out there is a LOT of beautiful artwork being created here in these streets, including some new and undiscovered artists who have never exhibited before.”

More Than Just a Trail: Events Across the Week

The Marshian Arts Trail is part of a broader effort to celebrate and stimulate local creativity, with a series of events running alongside the main exhibition:

Open Studio with John Lewis – Visit the artist’s home studio at 17 Forrest Avenue, open 2–5 pm on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th July.
Psychogeography Walk – Discover Marsh in a new light through a playful guided walk led by writer Richard Byrne. Starts Saturday 5th July at 11am, meeting at Playworld car park (45–60 minutes).
Exodus Photography Exhibition – Curated by Melangion, this exhibition at the Park Café and Conservatory at the bottom of Greenhead Park explores Yorkshire’s architectural and natural beauty through fresh perspectives.
Marshian Arts Craft Group – A friendly meet-up on Sunday 6th July, 2–4 pm, at the Greenhead Park Conservatory Café. Bring a project or come for inspiration and conversation.

The organisers are keen to build momentum beyond July and welcome new ideas and collaborators.

“We hope it inspires people to want to see more art and culture in our neighbourhood—if people have ideas and energy to make things happen, we’d love to hear from them and see what we can do together,” said Byrne.

“At the moment we have a monthly craft group and we’ve been talking about setting up some film screenings but need some extra shoulders to that particular wheel!”
