More than 40 artists and a packed programme of events to transform Huddersfield neighbourhood this June
A Huddersfield neighbourhood is preparing to burst into colour and creativity this summer as the Marshian Arts Trail returns for a 15-day celebration of local art, culture and community.
Running from Saturday 6 June to Sunday 21 June, the event will see Westbourne Road and the wider Marsh area transformed into an open-air gallery, showcasing the work of more than 40 artists alongside a wide-ranging programme of events.
Art in everyday spaces
At the heart of the trail will be exhibitions displayed across 38 businesses along Westbourne Road and New Hey Road, stretching from Marsh Liberal Club to The Junction Pub.
Visitors can explore a diverse array of artistic styles and mediums, including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, ceramics, sculpture, textiles and felting.
Organisers say the aim is to bring art out of traditional gallery spaces and into everyday settings, making it accessible to the wider community.
Satellite exhibitions and installations
In addition to the main trail, three satellite exhibitions will be hosted at Greenhead Park Conservatory Café.
These include the “Save the Rainforest” exhibition, a collection of photography and poetry by “The Waiting Room Poet” Mohamed Saloo, running throughout the festival, and a display of bonsai trees and bonsai-inspired paintings by artist FREAKone from 6 to 13 June.
Meanwhile, streets around Marsh will feature imaginative installations created by local residents during community workshops held over the May half-term.

Full programme of events
Alongside the exhibitions, a packed schedule of activities will run throughout the fortnight, including dance, meditation, poetry, film screenings, open studios, guided walks and yoga sessions.
The festival will open on Saturday, 6 June, with a day of activities at Body Evolution Fitness gym on Abb Street.
Workshops will include belly dancing with Ann Wear, Bhangra sessions led by Hardeep Sahota, yoga and mindful art with Amanda McKenzie, and bio-energy meditation with Judy Hinchliffe.
Visitors will also have the chance to try Blazepod reaction training with instructor Steven Morris.
During the opening day, award-winning local artist Serena Rogers will work with members of the public to create a large-scale textile installation on the railings outside the gym, which will remain on display throughout the trail.
Sunday 7 June will feature a Silent Book Club visit to TP Woods, a psychogeography walk around Marsh, and a “Meet the Artists” social with live art at The Junction Pub.
Other highlights include an “Art in the Park” session led by wellbeing charity S2R on Friday 12 June, and an open studio weekend on 13 and 14 June, with artists welcoming visitors in Marsh and nearby Edgerton.
On Monday, 15 June, Edgerton Cemetery Tower House will host film screenings and slide projections documenting travels in remote areas of Scotland, presented by Vivienne Mager and Jonathan Adamson.
The closing weekend, 20–21 June, will include a poetry workshop inspired by the trail, with selected pieces contributing to a future calligraphy exhibition, as well as a final “Meet the Artists” coffee-and-cake event at Marshmallow Café.
Community at its heart
This year’s event is supported by One Community, Dark Woods Foundation, Body Evolution Fitness, The Junction Pub, Kirklees Council’s Members Area Budget, and Co-op Funeralcare.
Marshian Arts spokesperson Richard Byrne said: “It’s going to be an absolute treat to see our neighbourhood adorned by the beautiful creations of the many talented artists who live amongst us in Huddersfield!
“We don’t believe art should just be tucked away in galleries, to be visited by a small proportion of the population.
“We want these beautiful creations, provocations and opportunities for joy and contemplation to be all around us in everyday settings like our local shops and businesses – inspiring, challenging and delighting us.

“To make that happen, our organising team have been out and about over the past few months, engaging with the lovely businesses in Marsh and rounding up a diverse selection of artists, and we’re excited to finally see it all on display.
“We’ve also planned a busy fortnight of events, with lots of opportunities to explore, learn and connect to our neighbours and, of course, our artists. And, thanks to our sponsors and supporters, all our events are free.
“Last year, we know many people came to sample the delights of our arts trail and events programme from across Kirklees, and we look forward to welcoming many more visitors to our neighbourhood this year. Our message is set a course for Marsh this June!”
All events are free to attend, with organisers encouraging residents and visitors alike to explore the trail and take part in the wide range of activities on offer.
