Michael Oyetayo’s redefined hip-hop project premieres with a message for young people in Nigeria and across the diaspora

A new music movement is aiming to prove that hip-hop can do far more than entertain — it can inspire an entire generation to dream bigger, challenge poverty and believe that their circumstances do not have to define their future.

That is the driving idea behind R.A.P. (Rise Above Poverty), whose official music video premiered on 28 August 2026, delivering a powerful visual and lyrical statement to young people across Nigeria and the global diaspora.

It marks the culmination of one man’s personal redemption and a bold reimagining of an entire music genre.

Redefining the acronym, redefining the culture

Traditionally, rap has stood for “Rhythm and Poetry.” For Michael Oyetayo and the Media Boyz team behind the project, it now stands for something far more urgent: Rise Above Poverty.

According to Oyetayo, mainstream hip-hop has historically done communities harm by telling young men they are “nobody unless you go to jail,” pushing them towards drugs, guns and violence.

In response, the project redefines the genre once again. The message at its core is simple: become the very best version of yourself so that you can be a blessing to your community.

Both a song and a growing movement

Oyetayo describes R.A.P Boyz as a message, a movement, and a call to a generation to reject hopelessness and choose purpose, creativity, discipline and positive change.

Poverty, the team argue, should never be allowed to silence a young person’s dreams. Through creativity and positive storytelling, R.A.P seeks to remind young people that their lives have value, their voices matter, and their futures can be different.

Crucially, the project is about celebrating those who have overcome barriers, those who are creating opportunities, and those who are making a difference in their communities.

The official video opens with a rousing call to the nation before launching into its uplifting chorus.

The lyrics celebrate hard work, prayer and self-belief, urging listeners to “rise above every limitation, any situation, no more hesitation.”

Celebrating Nigerian excellence and the diaspora

The track pays particular homage to Nigerians making their mark in the UK and around the world, reinforcing that greatness has no borders and that the Nigerian spirit thrives everywhere.

From entrepreneurs and creatives to professionals, community leaders and young people breaking new ground, these individuals represent something incredibly important: possibility.
