As November marks Men’s Mental Health Month, experts and campaigners are urging men to take small but meaningful steps to support their emotional well-being.
Here are five practical tips to help boost your mental health — and a few places to turn if you need further support.
Release Your Feelings
The key to good emotional well-being is allowing yourself to let go of your feelings.
Holding on to your emotions can negatively affect you more than you may realise.
Channelling how you feel through an activity such as a sport or writing them down in your notes app can help you to express yourself and lift your mood.
Be Kind to Yourself and Others
When you make a mistake, you may feel tempted to beat yourself up over it, but this will often do more harm than good.
Learning to accept your mistakes helps you to understand your emotions better, and this will also allow you to approach conflicts and arguments from a more level-headed perspective.
Talk It Out
Verbalising your feelings can feel like standing in front of somebody exposed, especially if you are accustomed to keeping things to yourself, but it is not a sign of weakness.
Being able to communicate is a huge step in the right direction and can put your mind at ease.
As the popular saying goes, ‘a problem shared is a problem halved’.
Stay Active
Your body and mind work in harmony, so taking care of yourself physically is a prime method for getting out of a bad mood and feeling better overall.
Something as simple as a short walk or even a few minutes of stretching your arms and legs can make all the difference when your thoughts are running wild.
Make a Routine
Engaging in regular daily activities and setting yourself a schedule along with some personal goals allows you to feel self-assured in your decisions when you encounter stressful situations.
Try This!
The next time your friend complains to you about a problem, ask them how they are genuinely doing and picture yourself in the situation that they are currently in.
