Engineering learners showcase high-tech skills as National Apprenticeship Week highlights the value of vocational training to the UK economy

MP Meets Next Generation of Engineers

Engineering apprentices from Bradford College welcomed a local MP to their workplace as part of celebrations for National Apprenticeship Week 2026 (9–15 February).

Judith Cummins MP visited Engineering Manufacturing Technician apprentices at AESSEAL plc near Dudley Hill, a company specialising in the design, manufacture and supply of mechanical seals and support systems.

AESSEAL was named the UK’s top apprentice employer in the manufacturing sector for 2025 by The Sunday Times.

After introductions with Bradford College’s CEO and Principal Chris Webb, the Labour MP for Bradford South toured the firm’s facilities and observed apprentices demonstrating their developing technical skills.

Apprentices Demonstrate CNC Expertise

During the visit, apprentices Alicia, Mohammed and Noah demonstrated how to operate a CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) machine to cut, drill and finish components used across engineering and manufacturing industries.

The demonstrations were followed by a roundtable discussion where apprentices shared their experiences and views on apprenticeship pathways.

The visit formed part of National Apprenticeship Week, an annual campaign designed to highlight the positive impact of apprenticeships on individuals, employers and the wider economy.

MP and Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons, Judith Cummins, said: “Apprenticeships open doors and create opportunities for learners, equipping them with valuable expertise while strengthening Bradford businesses.

“This partnership between ASSEAL and Bradford College is a great example of how education providers and employers work together with learners to grow local talent, and it was fantastic to see first-hand how apprentices are developing the advanced engineering skills that will drive Bradford’s manufacturing success for years to come.”

Building Skills for Industry

Bradford College’s apprentices are studying for a Level 3 Engineering Technician qualification, covering core engineering and manufacturing principles.

Combining practical college workshops with workplace mentoring, the programme develops technical ability and problem-solving skills, enabling apprentices to support engineers, troubleshoot machinery and contribute to efficient, compliant operations.

Apprentice Noah Heald reflected on his progress: “My apprenticeship has helped me develop new skills. I had no idea about CNC and machining – what it was or how to do it – before I started here, and now I can do it! That’s what I’m proud of being able to do.

“I like to think I do a good job, and I always try my best when I come into work. I try to get as much done as I can, in the best way I can, so hopefully I’m being a valuable member of the team.

“I’ve gained more confidence, working with people who are experienced in the field.[…] I hope to get as far as I can with CNC machinery as it’s something I enjoy and am interested in [and] I would 100% recommend an apprenticeship.”

Bradford College delivers apprenticeship training across a wide range of sectors, including engineering, construction, professional services, healthcare, dental, pharmacy, early years and teaching.

Prospective apprentices can meet the team at the Apprenticeships Unlocked Event (9 am–3 pm at Victoria Hall, Saltaire) or at the Apprenticeships Recruitment Fair (1–7 pm at the First Direct Bank Arena, Leeds) on Wednesday 11 February.
