Work on the ambitious £23 million transformation of Dewsbury Bus Station is set to commence this Sunday, 9th March, marking the start of a major redevelopment aimed at modernising and improving accessibility.

The project, led by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority in partnership with Kirklees Council and contractors Willmott Dixon, will enhance the station with upgraded facilities, including an improved main waiting area designed to attract more passengers.

Once complete, the bus station will feature state-of-the-art real-time information displays, improved safety and security measures, and environmentally friendly additions such as a ‘living roof’ covered in plants, cycle parking, and solar panels.

These elements align with West Yorkshire’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2038.

A key component of the redevelopment is the introduction of a ‘Changing Places’ toilet, equipped with additional space and specialised facilities such as a hoist and height-adjustable changing bench, catering to individuals with multiple and severe disabilities.

Another accessible toilet will also be available for people with disabilities.

Commitment to Public Transport and Sustainability

West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin welcomed the transformation, highlighting its role in encouraging greater use of public transport and contributing to the region’s climate goals.

“This is a transformational project that will make it easier and more accessible to use public transport in Dewsbury,” she said.

“Encouraging more people to use the bus helps towards reducing congestion, improving air quality, and tackling the climate emergency.

“I can’t wait to see the progress as we look to create a better-connected region that works for all.”

The initiative also supports Kirklees Council’s Dewsbury Blueprint, a broader strategy aimed at revitalising the town centre, boosting footfall, and enhancing accessibility.

Local Opportunities and Skills Development

During the first phase of construction, minimal disruption is expected, though some bus stand adjustments have already been implemented within the existing station.

As part of its social value commitment, Willmott Dixon is launching a ‘Building Lives Academy’ in collaboration with Kirklees College.

The academy will offer 12 local residents work experience on-site alongside classroom learning, equipping them with valuable skills for future employment.

Cllr Moses Crook, Deputy Leader of Kirklees Council and Cabinet Member for Transport and Housing, expressed enthusiasm for the investment: “I am really pleased to see this investment in Dewsbury, and I’m excited to see the transformation of the bus station, which is a fundamental step towards providing more accessible and sustainable travel options for everyone.

“These new facilities will make travelling by public transport a more attractive option and they will create more exciting opportunities for work, education, and training, as well as connecting communities, family, and friends across West Yorkshire.”

Chris Yates, Willmott Dixon’s Yorkshire director, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to community development: “Our transport and town centre regeneration experts are proud to be working in partnership with West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Kirklees Council to transform Dewsbury Bus Station into a modern and sustainable community transport hub.

A Greener Future for Dewsbury’s Transport Network

The scheme is funded through the Combined Authority’s Transforming Cities Fund, a programme aimed at making it easier to walk, cycle, and use public transport.

Construction is scheduled for completion by Summer 2027, forming part of the broader regional effort to develop a modern, greener, and integrated transport network.

This includes the introduction of a Mass Transit system, publicly controlled bus operations, and enhanced walking and cycling infrastructure.
